Navarro College continued to hire from within this week, naming offensive coordinator Nick Bobeck as the Bulldogs new head football coach Friday.
“Nick really made the difference in the success we had last year as an offensive coordinator,” Navarro President Dr. Richard Sanchez said. “He is a young, dynamic and energetic coach with a great deal of potential.
“I think the decision to go with Nick was the best one for the Navarro College football program.”
A graduate of Beaver High School in Beaver, Okla., Bobeck played collegiately at the University of Central Oklahoma where he was an All-Conference fullback.
“This opportunity is really important to me,” Bobeck said. “I am happy that the administration had the trust in me to be the head coach.
“(Ray) Woodard did a good job getting things started here and I am excited to take over.”
Bobeck began his coaching career at the University of Central Oklahoma as a graduate assistant where he coached seven All-Conference players and one All-American. He briefly joined the staff at Navarro as the quarterbacks/receivers coach in 2006. Before to taking the offensive coordinator position at Navarro, Bobeck was the offensive graduate assistant at Texas A&M under Dennis Franchione, helping the Aggies to an appearance in the Holiday Bowl.
Athletic Director Roark Montgomery said the school went through an extensive interview process to fill the position.
“We had four really good finalists who each had their pros and cons,” he said. “In the end we thought Nick was ready and had done a really good job as the offensive and recruiting coordinator.”
According to Montgomery, the decision to hire current Navarro coaches to both the basketball and football head coaching vacancies this summer took some time, but inevitably was the best decision for both programs.
“We probably have a more extensive interview process than most schools in the conference,” Montgomery said. “Our searches are wide open when we take applications for coaches so that we can find the best fit.
“The athletic department grooms our coaches to be head coaches, whether it is here or somewhere else and we take pride in that.”
