Navarro hires new defensive coordinator

Navarro College filled another coaching vacancy Monday, hiring Wade Griffin as the new defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs.

Griffin has spent the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Round Rock Westwood. Prior to Westwood, Griffin made high school coaching stops at Tenaha as defensive coordinator, as well as Brookshire Royal where he was the defensive coordinator for two seasons and head coach and athletic director for one year.

“I am really excited about this opportunity,” Griffin said. “I am excited about the kids we have this year.

“We have a defensive line that is as a good as anybody in America and have a very experienced secondary coming back.”

A graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma, he played fullback for the Bronchos from 1995-1998 before taking a graduate assistant position with the team in 1999 when current Navarro head coach Nick Bobeck was playing fullback for the Bronchos.

“He is an unbelievable football coach,” Bobeck said. “He works his tail off.

“I have known Wade for quite awhile and feel very blessed and happy to have him here.”

Griffin will run a 4-3 defense, converting the Bulldogs from a 4-2-5 that finished ranked second in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference last season allowing 313.5 yards per game.

“It was important to me to hire a 4-3 guy,” Bobeck said. “That is what he is and that is the scheme we recruited to and the type of kids we have.

“The most important thing was Wade’s passion. He is a guy that I trust and can give the defensive side of the ball to so that I can concentrate on offense.”
