Lady Bulldogs open season with Navarro Classic

The Navarro Lady Bulldogs volleyball team will kickoff the new season Friday, hosting the Navarro Classic XI round robin tournament.

The five team event is something Navarro coach Wally Brooks takes pride in.

“I don’t invite any bad teams to this tournament,” Brooks said. “They are all good.

“I don’t want us to start with anyone easy. If you go out there and just hammer somebody you don’t learn a lot.”

With only three sophomores returning to lead this Lady Bulldogs squad, Brooks will look to his strong freshman group to get Navarro off to a solid start.

“I expect a lot of good things from Sarah Owens from Wortham,” Brooks said. “She earned all kinds off accolades and I am excited about her.

“Megan Helal is our 6-1 girl from Crandall that strokes the ball pretty doggone hard and is really quick. We have some really good depth this year.”

Navarro will begin the tournament Friday at 9 a.m. against Midland, followed by a 1 p.m. match up with Lee.

Saturday the Lady Bulldogs will take on North Central at 11 a.m. and Temple at 5 p.m.
