Navarro soccer stays undefeated

By Shawn Edwards

The Navarro Lady Dawgs remain undefeated after another win at Bulldog field Wednesday.

After trailing early, Navarro was able to get back into rhythm as they defeated Tyler Junior College, 3-2.

The Lady Dawgs (9-0, 2-0 Region XIV) moved up two spots to the No. 4 ranking in the nation Wednesday morning.

Despite picking up the win, Navarro coach Debbie Bonner was not impressed with her team’s play.

“It was probably the worst game we have played this year,” Bonner said. “You have to execute and do the simple things.

“We didn’t do that and instead overreacted and doubted ourselves. That’s not normal for this team.”

The Lady Apaches (7-2, 1-1 Region XIV) were the first to strike in the game as Cassandra Branch managed to find the back of the net at the 27:16 mark in the first half.

It took 21 minutes, but the Lady Dawgs were able to tie things up with a Jennifer Wilson corner kick finding Lisa Gonzalez in front of the goal for the score.

Navarro was able to take its’ first lead of the game in the second half. At the 36:04 mark Toni Smith got the assist to Venicia Reid for her 16th goal of the year.

The Lady Dawgs extended that lead 18 minutes later as Pam Brookshire headed in a goal to put Navarro ahead 3-1.

Tyler’s Scarlet Tarno kept the Lady Apaches alive with a goal at the 11:31 mark, but Tyler was unable to get a good look at the goal in the final minutes to attempt the tie.

The Navarro victory broke a seven-game Tyler win streak.

“We just have to regroup and get it back,” Bonner said. “We are fortunate to get the win.”

The Lady Dawgs finished the game with eight shots on goal while Tyler recorded five.

Navarro will head to Richland today to face Allen County Community College (Kan.) before meeting back up with the Lady Apaches Saturday at 7 p.m. at Tyler.
