Burtis and Elayne became an item and were engaged while students at Huston-Tillotson College (now University). Burtis Robinson and the former Charmer Elayne Porter were married June 1, 1963 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Pelham by the Rev. J.B. Phoenix.
Burtis grew up in Frost and graduated from G.W. Jackson High School in Corsicana. He retired after 40 years of service as a faculty (science research) administrator in higher education and four years in service as a community organizer. Elayne grew up in Pelham and graduated from Pelham High School. She retired from Dallas Independent School District after 32 years of service at Bryan Adams High School as a biology teacher.
Burtis and Elayne spent the first three years of their marriage at Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Ala.; and since then had been lifelong Dallas residents and members of St. Luke Presbyterian Church in Dallas. Upon retirement they moved to Pelham 13 years ago. Burtis and Elayne share a passion for gardening, watching old western movies, feeding and watching the birds and yard animals, reading the Bible together, visiting the children and grandchildren, celebrating holidays and family reunions, traveling and feeling very blessed and humbled to be “Blessed Friends.”
Burtis and “The Doll” treasure spending time with their children and grandchildren, especially on the farm. They are blessed with two children; Charlayne Pettina (Tina) Baker and late husband Andre’ Lourice Baker Sr. and B. Bradwyck Robinson and wife, Felicia. Burtis and Elayne have five grandchildren: Andre’ Lourice Baker Jr., Chayne, Jonathan, Jordan and Joshua Robinson.
The family of Burtis and Elayne would like to thank God for blessing them with a life of service to youth and young adults, their community, The Church, and family as well as such wonderful examples of unconditional love and sacrifice and happiness. We hope their trust in God and in family values serves as an example to young couples.
Their pledge to one another is found in the book of Ruth in the bible. “Entrust me not to leave you — Where you go, I will go, where you stay, I will stay — Your people will be my people, and your God my God.”
They are still sweethearts (she his “Doll”) and feel their journey together has been greatly blessed with 50 golden years of marriage and more to come.
