The helmets and pads will be coming out as area high school teams get primed for the upcoming football season, holding their first practices of the new year starting Monday.

Coaches and players will have to battle with the sun as heat indexes are forecasted to be in the triple digits for most of the week during two-a-days.

Both Frost and Hubbard will avoid some of the heat, holding just one practice a day in the mornings.

Scorching rays, however, will not be the only challenge for coaches.

For first year head coach Scott Doring, it is a process of implementing his system into a Blooming Grove team that reached the playoffs for the first time since 1992 last season.

“We have a good core of guys coming back,” Doring said. “But it is difficult to know exactly what you have until you see them on the field.

“Our biggest challenge will be learning the new system and having everyone buy into it. We will have a lot of teaching to do.”

After having to forfeit their final four games of the schedule in 2007 due to not having enough players eligible, Frost head coach Clark Moore will be hoping for a solid player turnout Monday morning.

“I expect us to field a competitive team,” Moore said. “These guys that are committed to being here and are not afraid of hard work.

“We won’t have a large number of players, but the ones who are going to play have a good attitude and are dedicated to this team.”

After a 2-8 record for the Rice Bulldogs last year, coach David Currey will be looking to fill some holes in the secondary and kicking game.

“We will see who all we have show up and start to make adjustments,” Currey said. “I have an idea of who will be where, but we will have to see what works the best.

“Our main focus is to get the guys back in shape the next few days and keep them healthy.

The quarterback position will be up for grabs in Hubbard as the Jaguars begin preseason preparations.

“We have to find out what each guys job is on this team the first few days,” Jaguars coach Clay Mayo said. “The quarterback position will be open and we have a few guys that can step in and a play that position for us.”
