Floyd Ruthledge drives his son’s 1948 lavender Chevrolet pick-up from Austin each year for the Shakers and Scrapers car show at Derrick Days. The pick-up was his son’s truck, but when his son died of cancer, it became Floyd’s everyday ride, as well as his entry to the half-dozen car shows around the state that he attends. On Saturday, it also won him first place in his category.
He returns to Corsicana because of the quality of the show, he said.
“And I like what y’all do with your money,” Ruthledge said, referring to the Shakers’ tradition of choosing a charity as beneficiary. This year, the $8,300 in proceeds went to the Child Advocates of Navarro County.
The fifth annual car show started slowly, but grew all morning, until there were 154 guest cars and 25 “host” cars displayed in all their shining, chromed glory along Beaton Street.
“We have cars from Killeen, Belton, Waco, Tyler, Midlothian, really, all over,” said Suzie McGee, with the Shakers and Scrapers Car Club.
The group began advertising the show back in September, but much of the growth has been by word of mouth, she said.
The first year of the show, when it was held at the VFW Hall, there were fewer than 60 cars, she explained. Last year, there were 137 cars, plus the host cars.
Top winners of the contest were Club Choice, won by Buck Carter with his 1934 Buick; Police Chief’s Choice went to Mike Capps, for his 1962 Chevy Corvette; Sheriff’s Choice went to Sandra Reeves for her 1957 Chevy; Brad’s Choice went to Suzy Condover for her 1950 Mercury Coupe. Club participation prize went to Wicked Ways, while the Longest Distance award went to Blake Blackman who drove 200 miles to the show.
The cars are judged according to paint and body, trunk and interior, engine compartment, undercarriage and trim. Winners and runners-up of the 2008 Shakers and Scrapers Car Show are as follows:
