NRH Auxiliary

Navarro Regional Hospital Auxiliary held its installation of new officers and awards luncheon on April 24 at First United Methodist Church.

New officers for 2009-2010 are: Charlie Washburn, president; Shirley Barnes, president elect; Amelia Wood, first vice president; Genell Permenter, second vice president; Mary Biggers, third vice president; Sandra Curtis, recording secretary; Susan Stites, corresponding secretary; Barbara Talley, general treasurer; LaVera Hampel, gift shop treasurer; Carol North, historian; Vivian Green, parliamentarian; and Martha Washburn, past president.

Shirley Barnes received the Volunteer of the Year Award. Barnes began volunteering at Navarro Regional Hospital in January 1990. She works the front information desk and helps with many projects. She presided as president from 1994 to 1995. She has held many positions on the auxiliary board. She is a great asset to the auxiliary and the hospital.

Volunteers received their pins and hour bars. Pins are for the first 100 hours and bars are for every 500 hours. Those receiving pins and bars are as follows:

100 hour pin — Ingeborg Barnebee, Mary Biggers, Beverly Hale, Geri Owen, Genell Permenter, Margaret Ward, Amelia Wood

José Antonio Navarro Chapter, DRT

On May 12, José Antonio Navarro Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, awarded winning seventh and fourth grade students at Athens Christian Academy for essays they had written.

Geneva Davis, president of the chapter, awarded a certificate and monetary award to seventh grade student Avery Strand whose essay, “The Angel of Goliad,” won the District 5 award as well as the local chapter award. In honor of his awards, the school was presented a Texas flag which flew over the Alamo. Fourth grader Justice Wood was awarded a certificate and monetary award for being the chapter’s winner for his essay on the topic “José Antonio Navarro.” Also, Davis presented a book, “The Alamo,” to fourth grade creative writer Temple Hendrickson, who won honorable mention for his essay on the topic “José Antonio Navarro,” which was read Feb. 27 at the Navarro County Courthouse during the celebration of Navarro’s birthday.



Col. Roger Q. Mills Chapter 2466

Col. Roger Q. Mills Chapter 2466, United Daughters of the Confederacy, will meet at 1:30 p.m. May 23 at B-RI Railroad and Heritage Museum, 208 S. Third Ave., Teague. The museum is only open on Saturdays and Sundays. Members will be a vote on the proposed bylaws amendments. Also bring your canned goods for the “We Can” project. Corsicana Newcomers Club

Corsicana Newcomers Club will hold its monthly meeting May 28 at Kinsloe House, 618 W. Third Ave. Social time will be 11 a.m. and lunch will be at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be $12 and yearly dues are $10. The May speaker will be Frank Martinez with Navarro Regional Hospital. He will speak on women’s health initiative.

The “Roadrunners” will go to Dallas Farmers Market May 21. Those going will meet at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church parking lot and return at approximately 4 p.m. “Roadrunners” will shop for flowers and fruit and vegetables and have lunch at the Mexican restaurant at Farmers Market. If you would like to go, call Peggy Dixson at (903) 874-8316 so she can line up transportation.

Newcomers Club is a way to meet new friends, especially if you are new to the area, but anyone may join. Several members are from the lake area and surrounding areas. For more information, call Jane Sanders at (903) 874-0808.



Woman’s Club House Association

Louise Stough will be hostess for the Dutch treat games day luncheon May 27 at Kinsloe House where members are cordially invited to make reservations for a table of card or board games (bring your own) and enjoy a time of fellowship, pleasant conversation and a delicious lunch. Members are reminded to make reservations by noon May 25 by calling (903) 874-5791.



Purple Passion Ladies

The Purple Passion Ladies of the Red Hat Society met from 3 to 5 p.m. March 14 at LaPradera for a meal. Queen Warner Redus was hostess. The ladies had a planning session to complete the calendar through November for activities and events.

On April 4, the ladies went to Duncanville for lunch at 11:30 a.m. at Papadeaux. Brenda Ray, Lanall Brown and Virginia Mays were hostesses. The ladies had a delicious lunch and a fun time as usual when they get together.

On May 2, the Purple Passion Ladies went to Waco, hosted by Maurice Jefferson, Catherine Porter, Bobbie Loud and Beatrice Beaty. The first stop was at the Dr Pepper Museum. The ladies were given a tour that was very interesting which explained the beginning of the museum, interior artesian well, making of the soda with the older machine, different old soda vendors, and other interesting facts. The ladies completed their tour by having small samples of Dr Pepper in the soda fountain shop and visiting the gift shop. The ladies then went to Red Lobster to eat a delicious meal. Door prizes were given while the meal was being prepared. After lunch, the ladies played party bingo several ways with the winners receiving gifts. Then it was time to go to Richland Mall to shop and browse. The Purple Passion Ladies had a fun time together and look forward to the next event so they can love one another, laugh with fun and enjoyment, and live their lives as fun, lovable seniors.
