Hit-and-run driver kills teen riding moped

KOKOMO, Ind. — A community is grieving the death of a middle school student who aspired to be a doctor and basketball player when he died last week while driving a mo-ped.

Meanwhile, police are searching for the driver of they SUV they say struck the boy head-on and left the scene without stopping.

Christian Reede, 13, was tall at 6-feet, 3-inches, and had "big dreams," said his aunt, Jessica Roberts. "And he made an impression on people — especially the girls,” she added with a laugh.

Roberts organized a vigil Sunday evening near the south Kokomo intersection where last Thursday's accident happened. About 100 people stood in drizzling rain around a small memorial where police say the white, SUV-style truck hit Reede and a passenger, Donte Brown.

Reede died the following day at an Indianapolis hospital. Brown remains hospitalized in good condition, officials said.

Reede had family throughout the Indian Heights neighborhood, near the accident scene, and was often seen playing basketball or riding his bike. He attended Taylor Middle School, where classmates were shocked by his death.

"Taylor is a smaller school. Everybody knows everybody," said Beverly Forrey, the mother of a student. "So when something like this happens, everybody suffers."

Roberts and others said they hope the person responsible for the accident will contact the police.

"Come forward for your own peace of mind - for all of our peace of mind," she said. "We want to know what happened."
