Hey council!

Seems like only yesterday we turned the calendar over to New Year’s Day, 2007.It also seems like, if you blinked, you missed the 2007 experience — that’s how fast the year has flown by in my mind. Yet, we’ve made it to another Christmas and New Year week relatively unscathed, with challenges aplenty remaining in our little town.

Table this ...

That must be some table they’ve got at the Corsicana Government Center. And, by the time they are through with the two items that have been “bouncing” on that table of late — the proposed hiring of a bond project coordinator and new regulations regarding the sale of scrap metal — they may need to get a 55-gallon can of “Pledge” to put the polish back on.

Rules of War

Let me be clear. I never served in the military. Came close in the 70’s when we had draft cards and numbers. Would have gone had I been called, but I was not.Having laid that “disclaimer” right out in front, I still have to ask the question — Why are we debating what constitutes “torture” and what doesn’t?

Good works

Every once in a while I see, read or learn about something that helps to restore my faith in humanity. For the sake of good mental health, we all need that from time to time. Even before I tell you what has bolstered my faith, let me talk for just a moment about a very important word in the English language.

Some real truth about personnel

I did a column on county personnel and problems with the current system of compensation that appeared in the Daily Sun on June 29. I was criticized in a letter to the editor for not looking for the truth. I took that criticism to heart; and over the last few weeks, I searched for the truth.

Commentaries worse than actual column

In reply to Mr. Formby’s and Mr. Armon’s guest commentaries of March 26 and March 27, I might point out that it is our opinion page and not my opinion page. Both men were very critical of reading Mr. Narasimhan’s opinion, which did not coincide with their own. They even criticized the newspaper for printing it. I thought newspapers printed both sides of a story.

Terrell Owens might have a star on his helmet come August? What? Owens, who has had clashes with every team he has played for might come to the Cowboys after Dallas released veteran Keshawn Johnson.

Happy “Everything You Do Is Right Day.”You can find a whole year’s worth of wacky but real holidays like this one at www.chlive.org/becknews/crazy—holidays.htm. And many thanks to Linda Timmerman for telling me about the Web site. It’s comforting to know I’ll never again miss the chance to observe “What if Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day” which, alas, fell on March 3 this year.

Star Spangled problems with anthem

In all the years I spent in marching bands, from junior high to college, there was one thing we were all encouraged to do by each director — memorize the music. There is no way to figure how many pieces I had to learn during a football season, but it could be a sizable amount. Take into account the tunes needed for a show each week, plus the various fight and school songs involved, and you see my dilemma. Back then,

Clueless in Corsicana

You two-timin’, good-for-nothing, sorry dog, you!Somehow those are the words I woke up with Wednesday morning. It was almost if I had said them aloud. Maybe I did, who knows? I have no idea what I was dreaming about to possess me with such thoughts. It has really boggled my mind that I would wake up with such concepts racing through my brain.

A big thank you to Texas Lions Camp!

When we moved to Dawson in the early 1990s, my late husband Harrell and I met Libby Truelove, who immediately recruited us into the Dawson Lions Club. Her enthusiasm was echoed by all the members of the club. Our eyes were opened to the wonderful work of the Lions in collecting eyeglasses, providing glasses for children in need, the support for leader dog training and White Cane Day collection of donations for the eye bank.
