Familiar Faces
Team competes in contest
The Mildred FFA plant identification team competed in the annual pasture and range identification contest at the Fort Worth Stock Show. The teams have to be able to identify 122 forbs, legumes, grasses and woody plants and five characteristics of each. The Mildred team is coached by Mike Wisdom, FFA advisor. Members of the Mildred team are Jordan Fountain, Emily Lynch, Amanda Adams and Rosey Young.
Bell receives award
Corsicana native Betty Bell received the Health Care Heroes 2007 award from the Birmingham Business Journal for Health Care Provider — Non-physician in December. Bell, the founder of The Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs, located in Birmingham, Ala., has also been selected as a member of the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame, Class of 2008, with the awards ceremony scheduled to take place March 29 in Montgomery, Ala.
Parker receives scholarship
Navarro College full-time student Kathy Parker from Corsicana recently received the Ken Wylie Scholarship. Wylie was a longtime employee and friend of the college and passed away in 1999 after a long battle with cancer. This scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in the business and technology division at Navarro College. Parker is a business administration major and will graduate in the spring 2009.
Tackett receives recognition
Josh Tackett of Corsicana received the president’s award at Texas Tech University for the fall 2007 semester with a 4.0 and Academic All-American and Distinguished Academic All-American from Navarro College from his last semester there.
Students named to dean’s list
Ericka D. Andrews and Brenna Lauren York, both of Corsicana, were named to the dean’s list at Sam Houston State University for the fall 2007 semester.
Students receive degrees
Sam Houston State University has named the students receiving degrees in December 2007. Included were Corsicana students James Michael Graham, who received a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice, and Daniel Lee Wilkinson, who received a Bachelor of Science degree in geology.
Barham named to honor list
Riggin Barham of Blooming Grove was named to the distinguished students list for the 2007 fall semester at Blinn College in Brenham.
Students named to dean’s honor roll
Corsicana students Andrew Holland, Joe McFarland and Lawrence Thompson earned places on the dean’s honor roll for the fall 2007 semester at Texas State Technical College in Waco. Holland and Thompson are students in digital media design. McFarland is a student in aviation maintenance technology.
Students receive degrees
Corsicana students receiving degrees recently from Texas State University-San Marcos included Gabriel A. Sandoval, Bachelor of Music degree in sound recording technology and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics; Stanton D. Jones, bachelor’s degree in biology; and Cody A. Coble, bachelor’s degree in marketing.
Students named to dean’s list
Daniel A. Neal and Dustin J. Penney, both of Corsicana, were named to the fall 2007 dean’s list at Texas State University-San Marcos.
Cade’s work accepted in show
June Cade, local artist, has been accepted in the Museum of Western Art’s “RoundUp 2008” show in Kerrville. The reception will be held March 28.
The Visual Expressions and Creative Arts Studio (VECAS) has asked Cade to teach a three-day workshop May 7-9, sponsored by the Visual Expressions Art Gallery in Cedar Hill.
Cade has also been accepted to show in Graham at the “Art Splash on the Square” in May.
Cade will be in a two-person show with sculptor Curtis Fort from Tatum, N.M., at the Breckenridge Fine Arts Center from June 17 through Aug. 9, with the reception on June 28. She will also enter the annual juried art show in Breckenridge, which will be held this year on Aug. 30.
Cade will enter the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Show at Osage Beach, Mo. The reception will be held on Sept. 28. She will also enter other shows in the fall of this year.
Featured in two publications of InformArt Magazine and Sporting Classics magazine, Cade has also been seen in Art of the West, Southwest Art, Wildlife Art, and Cowboys and Indians magazines.
Cade is presently represented by the following galleries: L-Bar Gallery in Kerrville; Visual Expressions Art Gallery in Cedar Hill; Stonewall Gallery in Clifton; and Studio W in Ruidoso, N.M.

Military news
Robert Keith Shimonek recently completed his basic Navy training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. From there he will travel to Panama, Fla., to begin his Explosive Ordnance Disposal training for the next 52 weeks. Shimonek is a 2005 graduate of Mildred High School. He has extended family in the area: parents Mike and Debbie Shimonek and sister Jennifer Shimonek, all of Eureka; brother Michael Shimonek of Corsicana; grandparents Fred and Kay Shimonek and Billy Don and Betty Atkeisson, all of Corsicana; and aunts and uncles Kenny and Tresa Shimonek of Eureka, Chip and Lillie Atkeisson of Corsicana, Danny and Cassie Atkeisson of The Colony, Kenny and Lori Atkeisson of Grapevine, Steve and Dolores Shimonek of Houston and James and Christi Jackson of Malakoff.
