Mildred FFA

competes

Team members from Mildred FFA recently competed in the Freestone County Soil and Water Conservation District contest.

The students judged surface texture, permeability, depth, slope, erosion, runoff and determined land class along with vegetative, mechanical and fertilizer and soil amendments.

The students have attended the Centerville contest and will attend the Tarleton State University Invitational, Navarro County contest, and area contest at TSU.



Individuals, teams compete

The DCI Stars, under the direction of Barbara Scott and Jaime Skinner, competed at a Cheer America national competition Feb. 29 through March 2 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. All of the national champions received jackets and medals. Tryouts for the 2008-2009 season will be March 28-29. For more information, call Dance Connection Inc.

The show team received trophies for its outstanding performance. The youth squad placed fifth out of nine in its division. The junior squad placed fourth out of nine in its division. The senior squad placed third (against Woodlands Elite) in its division. The mini dance team received the national champion title. The youth dance team placed second in the jazz division. The junior dance team received the national champion title in both the jazz category and pom division. Mallory Dowd and Rylea Skinner were named national champions in the spirit leader duo division. They were coached by Brittany Stallings. Katelyn Guinn, McKenzie Mrazek and Payton Simpson were named national champions for the fourth year in a row in the small group dance division.



Kormos receives award

The National Society of High School Scholars has announced that Corsicana High School student Shae Kormos has been selected for membership. The society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence.

“On behalf of NSHSS, I am honored to recognize the hard work, sacrifice, and commitment that Shae Kormos has demonstrated to achieve this exceptional level of academic excellence,” said Claes Nobel, NSHSS founder and chairman, and a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes. “Shae Kormos is now a member of a unique community of scholars — a community that represents our very best hope for the future.”

“Our vision is to build a dynamic international organization that connects members with meaningful content, resources, and opportunities,” said NSHSS president James Lewis. “We aim to help students like Shae Kormos build on their academic successes and enhance the skills and desires to have a positive impact on the global community.”

Membership in NSHSS entitles qualified students to enjoy a wide variety of benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, member-only resources, publications, participation in programs offered by educational partners, online forums, personalized recognition items and publicity honors.



Military news

Navy Reserve Seaman Jessica R. Simpson, daughter of Trina J. and Jeffrey S. Allred of Corsicana, was recently promoted to her current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Simpson received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle. Simpson is a 2006 graduate of Corsicana High School.
