The Mildred Student Council has decided to combine several good ideas into one great one, and are hosting a community-wide Chasing the Cure benefit walk and pancake breakfast May 17.
“We are in the works as we speak on putting together a community event to help raise money for the American Cancer Society,” said Student Council sponsor Sherrie Bottoms. “We have planned to do a mini-marathon walk here on that morning, in conjunction with a community pancake breakfast, which is all-you-can-eat for $5.
“We would like as much participation as possible from our campuses, but more than that, we would love the participation to extend to our community. We know they love to participate and be involved in the many things here at the school — especially when it comes to a good cause and good food.”
Bottoms said details are still being “ironed out” and finalized, but council members are hoping to have a raffle in addition to games on the field. The pancake breakfast will start at 9 a.m. and wrap up at 11 a.m., in order to give the folks in the kitchen enough time to clean up and join the others out on the track at noon.
“We will be selling survivor and honorary balloons to circle the track that day for anyone wanting to purchase one for a loved one,” she said. “We plan to release the balloons at noon that day.”
Chasing the Cure Balloons are available for purchase by contacting Mildred High School. Bottoms said several years ago, the Student Council had a team at the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and keeping up with all the teenagers all night was difficult. The Student Council decided instead this year to have this event, which just happens to fall right after the conclusion of Relay for Life at 7 a.m., and invite everyone from Relay to come on out to the Mildred campus and have pancakes and have the celebration of life continue.
“The kids came up with this idea, and we will donate all the money we raise from the three things — the pancake breakfast, the mini-marathon, and the balloon sales — to the American Cancer Society.”
