Holcomb to leave museums

By Bob Belcher

Julie Holcomb, director of the Pearce Civil War and Western Art Museums at Navarro College, has announced she is leaving her post to pursue a teaching opportunity at Baylor University.

Holcomb served as archivist at the museums before being named director of the collections. She leaves behind one of the country’s finest collections of Civil War documents, and a growing collection of authentic western art pieces acquired by Charles Pearce and housed in the college facility.

She will be joining the museum studies program at Baylor, working primarily with graduate students interested in following her footsteps as a museum director. The teaching opportunity is a perfect fit for her background.

“I’ll be teaching, advising and mentoring students in that program ... students who either want to go into education or collections or somewhere down the road want to be a museum director,” Holcomb said.

“I’ve wanted for sometime now to move into teaching. It’s a great opportunity. It’s a great program.”

She said her position will be the first full-time teaching position in the Baylor program. Several other faculty members in the museum studies department also carry administrative responsibilities.

“She’s brought a lot of recognition to the collection and the museums,” said Dr. Tommy Stringer, executive director of the Navarro College Foundation. “We will miss her, but we wish her success in her new position.”
