Church News 6/27/08
Grace Community Church, 227 N. Beaton St., has announced that it has issued a call to Steve Hayes to be the senior pastor, and he has graciously accepted.
Hayes was born in Bremerhaven, Germany, in 1972, and shortly thereafter moved to Lake Charles, La., where he grew up. Hayes moved to Texas in 1993 and married his beautiful wife, Kim, in August 1996. They have four children, Trent, age 9; Cale, age 7; Pierce, age 5; and Jillian, age 3.
Hayes’ formal biblical studies started in 1996 at The Criswell College in Dallas, and continued until May 2002. He studied Greek and Hebrew and honed his skills in creative writing, biblical interpretation and homiletics — the art of preaching or writing sermons. During this time he also developed and refined his skills in research, technical writing and biblical analysis. After completing his studies, he was conferred with a Bachelor of Arts in biblical studies, and a Master of Arts in New Testament.
During his years of study, Hayes gained a tremendous amount of practical experience serving in a variety of positions. From 1996 to 1998 he served as a youth intern for Lake Pointe Church in Rockwall. During this time he planned events, taught classes, built teams, recruited and formed authentic relationships. In 1998 through April 2002 at the same church, he served as a singles intern where he built upon his experience with the youth. During this time he also led many meetings and began to gain experience in communications and marketing.
Starting in May 2001, and for almost four years, Hayes served as pastor of students and worship at Grace Community Church. During this time, Hayes planned the worship services and led the worship team with great success. He was also responsible for planning all the youth services and events, leading this area of the church in what many feel has been the most successful period in the church’s history. During this time Hayes also preached on occasion, taught classes at Grace University, worked on marketing and promotions, and was intimately involved in the mini-church program. Hayes’ greatest legacy, however, has been his success in building long-term, authentic, sustainable relationships with those whose lives he and his family had touched
during this time.
In February 2005, Hayes accepted a call to serve at Irving Bible Church where he eventually became the head pastor of Bible Communities, the on-campus equivalent of Grace’s off-campus mini-church program. Hayes was responsible for developing the vision and curriculum for this program, as well as leading all program teams. This included managing 17 Bible Communities classes, 80 leaders and 50 teachers. Hayes also continued preaching, teaching, planning events and counseling.
Hayes’ credentials are buttressed by his membership in several professional organizations. He serves on the board of directors for the “Share the Well Foundation,” which is dedicated to providing resources and raising awareness for the oppressed people of India. He is also a founding member of “The Cartel,” which is a group of Dallas-area pastors who focus on sharing information and experiences that benefit ministry geared toward emerging generations.
Hayes has also served as a creative consultant for “The Fusion Conference,” which is an experience designed to ignite emerging generations in such a way that they will fuse their faith and life to change the world for Christ.
Hayes has a true shepherd’s heart, and loves people. The key passage in scripture that Hayes strives to flesh out on a daily basis is Luke 10:27. When asked what motivates him as a pastor, he said, “I am a people person. I love listening to them and their hearts, and then serving them.” His family life and service to the community all reflects well his heart for Christ.
Grace Community Church looks forward to having Hayes lead it as Grace continues to reach out and have a positive impact on Corsicana and the surrounding area.

Three years later God called him into the ministry. McBryde is a graduate of Faith Bible Institute and has attended seminary at Central Arkansas Bible Institute in Benton, Ark.
