Dawson Lions Club
Dawson Lions Club met May 28 for a noon luncheon in Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church in Dawson. The meeting began with the singing of “God Bless America” and the reciting of the pledge to the flag of the United States. After a blessing of the food, lunch was served.
The program for the day had two parts. First the club heard a report by Mr. McElroy, who represents PHI Air Medical, one of 300 medical and non-medical helicopters and over 70 air medical bases nationwide operated by PHI Inc., based in Louisiana. PHI transports trauma victims for treatment.
Then Sgt. Charles Statham, an officer with the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office, gave a crime watch report.
Cameron Shaw, graduating senior at Dawson High School, was announced as recipient of the Lions scholarship.
DAYSA (Dawson Area Youth Sports Association) sent thanks for the Lions Club donation. Texas Lions Camp also received a donation from the Lions.
Col. Roger Q. Mills Chapter 2466, UDC
Col. Roger Q. Mills Chapter 2466, United Daughters of the Confederacy, met May 31 at the Freestone County Historical Museum in Fairfield with 11 members and four guests present.
The meeting was called to order by Marlene Ivy, president. This chapter was organized in Corsicana on Aug. 31, 1982. The object of UDC is historical, educational, memorial, and patriotic. Pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags and salute to the Confederate flag were led by chaplain Geneva Davis.
Certificates for 26 years of uninterrupted UDC membership were presented to the following charter members: Opal Bonner (posthumously, accepted by daughter-in-law Verna Bonner); Lena Mae Fryer (accepted by daughter Barbara Price); and Marlene Ivy (presented by Verna Bonner, chapter member and honorary president of Texas Division, UDC). Six other charter members will receive 26-year certificates as follows: Kay Hable, Edna Hodge, Betty Partain, Jo Ann Surl, Jimma Traweek and Marjorie Willard. Iris Cowan will receive a 25-year certificate posthumously.
Millicent McLeod, a member of the museum board, gave a brief history of the museum, and the members of the chapter made a tour of the museum facilities. The chapter enjoyed the tour and have expressed thanks to McLeod and to chapter member Nancy Rula for making arrangements for the tour.
Jan Reeder gave a short program about CSA President Jefferson Davis monument. June 3 was Davis’ 200th birthday. Also, as chairman of the “Can Project,” she reported that the chapter had collected about 54 pounds of food at the last meeting and had delivered it to the Lord’s Pantry in Buffalo.
A big “thank you” goes to Brad Pullin, the museum curator for welcoming the chapter to the museum and for photographing the group.
The museum contains hundreds of historical items donated by or on loan from residents and former residents of Freestone County. Gift memorials are available and donations are very welcome. Two popular histories available are “Freestone County History” and “Fryer’s Delight” by Barbara Fryer Price, a history of her family.
Other chapter members present were Patricia Chappell, Geneva Davis, Judy Greene, Dean Nevills, Barbara Robinson, Lynn Shaver and Gelene Simpson.
Visitors were Cathy Akin, Wanda Cooper, Barbara Price and Millicent McLeod. Members came from Buffalo, Corsicana, Dawson, Richland and Wortham, as well as other areas.
Refreshments were provided by Chappell and Nevills.

Navarro County Republican Women
Texas Federation Republican Women will have a rally on Sept. 6 in Salado. The theme will be “Turn Region XI Totally Red.” Region XI includes Senatorial District 22, which includes Navarro County, and also SD24. There will be speakers and lots of campaign planning for the November election. The event will be held at the Holiday Inn Express in Salado. It will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m. and will end at 3:30 p.m. Registration will be $20, including lunch. Rooms at the Holiday Inn are available for $99 for those that want to stay overnight.
