Kids learn about public safety at ‘First Responder’s Day’

Tuesday morning, members of the Corsicana Fire and Police departments gave children a lesson in public safety services as part of the Corsicana Parks and Recreation Department’s summer youth program.

“Today was just to let the kids know what police officers and firefighters have to do,” park superintendent Jeff Whitehead said. “We had a lot more signed up that didn’t show, but the kids had a good time.”

As part of the “First Response” day, area children got to meet working firefighters and police officers who explained their jobs and the equipment they used while doing them.

The lesson started at 9 a.m. with members of the Fire Department giving information on their ambulance and emergency services and continued through the 11 o’clock hour with a police response lesson.

“I learned about bandages and medicine from the fireman and a lot of cool stuff from the policeman,” Park Meadows Baptist Academy student Kenner Karpiak said. “I liked all of it, and it was a lot of fun, but I think I liked the policeman the best.”

D.A.R.E. officer James Hudson — with the help of officer Lela Martin — taught the group of children about the different vehicles, including the S.W.A.T. vehicle, and equipment that police use as well as instructing on the basic safety rules that everyone should follow.

“We learned a lot and had a lot of fun,” Corsicana resident and mother Shahnoor Chunara said. “This helps us to know a lot about the little things that most people don’t get a chance to learn. My daughter Sameeta really enjoyed the day, and so did I.”
