NC schedules Hispanic outreach event Aug. 14

From Staff Reports

Navarro College will host the 2008 Hispanic community event beginning at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at The Cook Center located on the Corsicana campus. The event, a collaboration between Navarro College and the LUPE (Latinos Unidos por la Educacion) committee, has become an annual event at Navarro College. LUPE, comprised of civic and community leaders and representatives from Navarro College, work to answer questions and concerns about higher education regarding the Hispanic community.

“It is possible for everyone to obtain a degree,” said Donna Parish, Navarro College marketing director. “We want to encourage our Hispanic community to come to the event, ask questions, and let us walk you through the enrollment process. We’ll have bilingual presenters in attendance and booths set up in The Cook Center atrium so students and parents can informally browse and collect information about Navarro College and other community-centered businesses.”

If you are interested in enrolling as a full-time student or just wanting to take a class or two, this event will get you started. The evening will begin with a short video presentation in Spanish about the college’s success stories from the local Hispanic community, including how it is possible for everyone to attend college and get an education.

College representatives will be on hand from financial aid, admissions, academics, and other departments to discuss procedures on how to enroll and attend college, along with local businesses who will provide information about banking, health care and job opportunities. Numerous bilingual speakers will be available for the event to assist in filling out all the necessary paperwork, etc., so interested students will be ready to enroll for fall 2008 classes. Everyone is welcome to attend.

A Navarro College bus will be available beginning at 6 p.m. at the H-E-B parking lot to shuttle those who need transportation to the college. Child care will be provided free on the campus at Gibson Hall. Refreshments will be served. The college bulldog mascot, Beauregard, will make an appearance during the evening.

For more information, contact Margaret Moreno, Navarro College diversity outreach recruiter, at (903) 875-7341 or margaret.moreno@navarrocollege.edu.
