Club News

Dawson Lions Club

Dawson Lions Club met at noon July 23 at First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, Dawson. Lion Norman Summers was asked by Lion president Jo Maxwell to lead the club in singing “God Bless America” and reciting the pledge to the flag. Lion Lena Mae Carver provided piano accompaniment.

Maxwell introduced special guest Amy Callarman, new principal of Dawson High School.

“Happy Birthday” was sung to Lions Ruby Faucett, Lena Mae Carver and Jim Meredith. A get-well card was signed for Lion Paula Mullins.

Lion Cecil Sanders asked the blessing of the food, and lunch was served.

After the good meal was finished, Maxwell called for nominations for Dawson Lion of the Year. Lion Linda Mixon was elected for having provided excellent speakers and programs over the year and for being a valuable member in many other ways.

Secretary/treasurer Bill Ryan reported that four members had earned attendance awards. Lions Leonard Mixon and George Faucett received recognition for one year perfect attendance. Lions Lena Mae Carver and Bill Ryan received pins for two years perfect attendance.

The Rev. Michael Redmond was initiated as a new member by Lion board chairman Norman Summers. Redmond has been designated Dawson Lions Club chaplain.

Callarman was asked to speak to the club about her plans for the Dawson Junior and Senior High School. Her address was very well received. An invitation was extended for her to join the club.

The closing prayer was given by Redmond.

Woman’s Club House Association

The membership committee, chaired by Winona Stewart, will host the Aug. 13 luncheon at Kinsloe House.

The program, “The Lawmen at Oswald’s Side,” will be presented by Sonny Boyd, retired detective with the Dallas Police Department who now resides in Blooming Grove.

Boyd, along with his detective partner Richard Sims, worked for 20 years under Capt. Will Fritz, Dallas Police Department. They never saw a suspect as cool under fire as the one they met on Nov. 22, 1963 — accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald.

These two detectives spent more time than anyone else with Oswald in the days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy almost 45 years ago.

Join in to hear this oral history presented by Boyd. Reservations or cancellations must be made by noon Aug. 11 by calling (903) 874-5791.

Membership committee members are chairman Winona Stewart, Marsha Banks, Sandra Curtis, Pat Howell, Margaret Thomas and Martha Washburn.
