Reunions
G.W. Carver High School reunion
The alumni of the ex-G.W. Carver High School, Dawson, held the 27th annual reunion July 25-27 at St. James Methodist Church, Hopewell Baptist Church and First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Dawson.
The memorial service was 7 p.m. July 25 at First Baptist Fellowship Hall. Featured selections were the youth choir from House of Refuge Church of God in Christ of Dawson, praise dance and skit from Love Chapel Baptist Church of Corsicana, Billy/Ocie Henry Group from Corsicana, and Faith Gospel Singers from Freedom Fellowship Church in Corsicana. The speaker was Minister Allen Campbell of Thirteenth Avenue Christian Church of Corsicana. Campbell is a 1964 graduate of Carver school and vice president of the reunion.
Also featured on July 25 was the baby contest. The winner for the 3 to 5 age group was Trinity Reign Gardner, who was born June 29, 2005. She is the daughter of Andre and Patrice Gardner, has a big sister Shiloh Zion, and is the granddaughter of Howard and Annie Lusk. Trinity loves to read, sing, swim, tumble and dance. She will enter pre-kindergarten three in the fall.
The 7 to 9 year-old-age group winner was Bethany Rose Campbell, age 7. Her parents are Fredrick and Betty Campbell of Lewisville and her grandparents are Allen and Bethana Campbell of Purdon, the late Aaron Butcher and Rose Butcher of Kirvin. Bethany is a second grader at Lakeland Elementary in Lewisville. Her hobbies are keyboard flash piano, cheerleader, basketball and soccer.
On July 26, the general meeting was held at 10 a.m. at St. James Methodist Church. At 11:30 a.m. an historical marker was dedicated at the site of the former G.W. Carver School (Farmersville addition of Dawson), now owned by the Shaw family (Second Avenue East). Services included scripture by Howard Lusk, prayer by Chester Jones, and school history by Betty Barge-Calhoun.
The school was located at the above-mentioned address from approximately 1920 to 1961. A new school was built in 1961 up near the town of Dawson behind the football field. Due to integration, the school was dissolved in 1965 and renamed Dawson Elementary for all students.
Dedication speaker was Hugh Collins for the unveiling of marker. After the adjournment, a car parade was held at 12:30 p.m. followed by a picnic at Dawson Park at 1 p.m.
A banquet was held at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Special selections were by Sons of Bonnieview Christian Church and Men of Purpose of Bonnieview Christian Church of Dallas. Words of inspiration were by Minister M. Babers, Hugh Collins and Glenn Cottrell. Decorations were by Bobbie Sample of Hutchins and Allen and Bethana Campbell were caterers. Graduates from 1957 and 1958 were awarded 50-year certificates.
On July 27, a church service was held at 11 a.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church in Dawson, where the Rev. Monroe Allen is pastor. The Curtis W. Sparks Sr. Afro-American Scholarship awards were presented to Devin Sims, Jasmine Jack and Jerome Tennison by Betty Barge-Calhoun, chairperson.
Sims is the grandson of Anthony and Uniloyd Lacy. He is attending the University of North Texas.
Tennison is a May 2008 graduate of Dawson High School. He was on the football team. He will attend McMurry University in Abilene. His parents are Rhonda and Launcel Moore and he is the grandson of June Tennison.
Jack is a graduate of Ranchview High School of Irving. She is a four-year honor student and participated in many extracurricular activities. Jack will attend Houston Baptist University. She is the daughter of Robert and Robin Jack and is the granddaughter of Robert and Georgia Lemon.
G.W. Carver Ex-Students president is Jake Griffin, vice president is Allen Campbell, secretary is Robbie Carr, treasurer is Uniloyd Lacy, and scholarship chairperson is Bettye Barge-Calhoun.
Kmart reunion
Former Corsicana Kmart Warehouse and Store employees will have a reunion from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 20 at I.O.O.F Park in Corsicana. Those wishing to attend are asked to submit $15 per family by Sept. 1 to Kmart Reunion, 1719 Dogwood Trail, Corsicana, TX 75110. Along with your payment, also include how many from your family will be attending the event. The $15 will help cover the park rental and meat. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish. USS Missouri BB-63 Association reunion
Shipmates who served aboard the battleship USS Missouri BB-63 will hold their 35th annual reunion Aug. 28 through Sept. 1 in San Antonio.
