Greater Renfro Memorial Church of God in Christ Showers of Blessings committee cordially extends an invitation for the second annual appreciation banquet for Pastor and Sister William Lewis Jr. The event will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 4 at Lifeline Fellowship, 5301 W. State Highway 31. Special guest speaker will be nationally-known saxophonist Dr. Vernard Johnson of Kansas City, Mo. Johnson is a dynamic pastor with 18 recordings and is also the first black person to receive a doctorate degree in music from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. Straight Way Missionary Baptist Church, 400 S. 15th St., will celebrate Pastor and Sister A.E. Smith in appreciation services. The theme is “A New Beginning” from 2 Corinthians 5:17. Services began at 7 p.m. Oct. 2 with the Straight Way junior and senior choir in charge of the program and Sister J. Watts as emcee. A warm welcome was given by Sister A. West with encouraging words by Deacon and Deaconess P. West. Guest church was Lifeline Church and Pastor R. Walter. Special choirs with A selections were Sixth Avenue, Bethlehem, Love Chapel and Wilgo.
Today’s special guests will be Pastor C. Chambers and Thirteenth Avenue Church family. Sister Valarie Cephus will serve as emcee along with the usher department and brotherhood. Sister S. Gatlin would like to welcome everyone to today’s service. Guest choir will be Macedonia, Freedom Fellowship, New Cornerstone and Grace Temple.
At 3 p.m. Sunday, the celebration will be completed with Pastor N. Carter and the Mount B. Zion Church family. A special welcome by Straight Way on “Marvelous Mom.” Emcee will be Sister F. Kitchen. The pastor and wife appreciation committee is headed by S. P. Daniels, Sister D. Miller and Mother Reese and they said the excitement is at Straight Way and they are fired up and ready to go to show their pastor and wife how much they love them.
Barry United Methodist Church and Emhouse United Methodist Church will have its Lord’s Acre Nov. 1 at the Fannie Mae Vernon Room of the Navarro County Exposition Center, State Highway 22, Corsicana. Country store and sweet shop will open at 10:30 a.m. with lunch served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Menu will be turkey and dressing and trimmings, and homemade pies. Carry-out meals will be available. Auction will begin at 1 p.m.
Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, 409 N. Third St., (903) 874-7834, where the Rev. Dairy G. Johnson Sr. is pastor, will have its first fall musical fest at 4 p.m. Oct. 5, presented by the sanctuary choir. The public is invited. The theme will be “Come and rejoice in the harvest.” Registration will be $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under with rehearsals at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3-4. Blooming Grove United Methodist Church will have its Lord’s Acre dinner and sale Oct. 11. The day’s events will begin with the country store at 9 a.m. with “white elephant” items, canned goods, baked goodies and a variety of handmade items. A barbecue lunch will start at 11:30 a.m. Call (903) 695-2334 for take-out meals starting at 11 a.m. Menu will include brisket, potato salad, coleslaw, pinto beans, tea and dessert. Cost will be $8 for adults and $6 for children 8 and under. Donations to pay for the brisket can be made to Terry Golden. Each church member is asked to bring a cake for dessert. Auctioneer John Paul Ross will start the auction at 1 p.m. Child care for children 5 and under will be provided in Heritage Hall during the auction. Calvary Church invites the public to join in at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 1114 E. Sixth Ave., with Apostle David Floyd and Rehoboth Temple of the Holy Spirit of Dallas.
If you have been resuscitating life’s problems over and over, you don’t need resuscitation, you need resurrection. When you are resuscitated every sickness, pain, problem that you had before CPR (Christian Postponement of Reality), you will still encounter after CPR has been successfully performed. Your problems are temporarily delayed and there is no deliverance. Only God can resurrect you. Only God’s word can give you life (Acts 3:19). Church in the Park, where James Shugart is pastor, meets at Fullerton-Garitty Park pavilion at 9 a.m. each Sunday.
Church in the Park was begun as a ministry for folks of any or no denomination who are not involved in a local church. You are welcome to “come as you are” for Bible study and worship in a relaxed, casual, outdoor setting. For more information, call (903) 874-3114.
Faith Temple Ministries, located on North Highway 75, Fairfield, where P.A. Rischer is pastor, will host a volleyball tournament at 11 a.m. Oct. 4 on the church grounds. First United Methodist Church of Corsicana, 320 N. 15th St., invites everyone to come and enjoy a wonderful breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Oct. 4. First United Methodist Church of Dawson, located at 200 N. Main St., will hold its Lord’s Acre Oct. 11. A live auction will begin at 1 p.m. The country store will open at 10:30 a.m. The barbecue lunch will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children 4 to 12 years old, and children under 4 will eat free. The lunch will consist of barbecue brisket, pinto beans, potato salad, coleslaw, pickles, onions, peppers, bread, dessert and a beverage. Take-out meals will be available. Proceeds from the Lord’s Acre will go to special church and community projects.
First United Methodist Church of Hubbard, 208 N.W. Second St., will have its 30th annual Lord’s Acre festival Oct. 18. From 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the country store will be open at fellowship hall with many handmade items and baked goods available for purchase. Visitors will also have an opportunity to preview the many beautiful quilts made by the Quilters for Christ as well as other items that will be in the auction that begins at 2 p.m.
Quilters for Christ are ladies from the Methodist church as well as ladies in the Hubbard community and surrounding towns that come together each Tuesday throughout the year and share their love of quilting, embroidery, and crochet. Carrie Lee Killough and Martha Bell are the Lord’s Acre co-chairmen and they do an excellent job of designing the quilts and coordinating the fabrics and colors.
At the conclusion of the auction, a turkey and dressing meal will be served in the Haralson Center, adjacent to the church. Cost of the meal will be $7 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. Take-out meals will also be available.

Frost United Methodist Church will have its Lord’s Acre Oct. 4 at the Frost High School cafetorium. Dinner will be at 11:30 a.m. with the auction to follow at 1 p.m. Take-out meals will be available starting at 11 a.m. Cost for meals will be $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Meals will be barbecue brisket, chicken and sausage, beans, potato salad, coleslaw, bread, homemade cake, and iced tea.
Kelly’s Temple Church of God In Christ, 501 N. Third St., where Elder Billy Joe Kelly serves as pastor, will host the 2008 women’s conference at 4 p.m. Oct. 12. The speaker will be Evangelist Calisha Woods of Fairbanks, Alaska. She is the daughter of Linda and Michael Glover, granddaughter of the late Gustavia Renfro Kelly and the late Rhesa B. Miller, and great-granddaughter of the late Elder P.R. Renfro and Mother Marie Renfro, founders of the Greater Renfro Memorial COGIC. Woods will be accompanied by Evangelist Angela Jones of Anchorage, Alaska, and Evangelist Denise Long of Fairbanks, Alaska. The theme will be “God’s Calling For Accountability.”
She is author of three books and has her own publishing company. She is currently working on her bachelor’s degree in ministry and she plans to get her master’s degree in Christian counseling. She hosts her own talk show “Food For Your Soul.” You are invited to come and hear this anointed young lady preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. Praise and worship will be by recording artist psalmist Willene Luper of The Potter’s House. Luper recorded “Woman, Thou Art Loosed,” which reinforces Bishop T.D. Jake’s stage play and movie. She completed her bachelor’s degree in 1997 after student teaching in Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa. She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate with highest distinction and highest honors, double majoring in journalism education and speech and drama from the University of Iowa. Two years later, she completed her master’s degree in educational administration at the University of Iowa.
Prior to receiving certification to be a principal, Luper was selected to be a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar and conduct research on the educational system in Ghana, West Africa. Luper has completed her educational administration doctoral degree course work at University of North Texas. She has showcased her vocal talent in front of a wide range of audiences.

Love Chapel Baptist Church, 400 N. Benton St., will observe its Sunday school annual at 3 p.m. Oct. 12. Men’s Community Prayer Breakfast meets at 6:45 a.m. Wednesdays in the Lone Star Room of the Walker Dining Hall on the Navarro College campus. This meeting is open to all men in the community. Open Bible study and gospel singing is held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. every Thursday at the Senior Activity Center, 919 W. Park Ave., Corsicana. Powell Baptist Church will have the southern gospel group Southern Joy in concert at 6 p.m. Oct. 12. Everyone is invited to attend.
St. John’s Episcopal Church, 101 N. 14th St., will have a St. Francis’ Day celebration with the blessing of the animals from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 9. Families and their pets are invited. Activities will include the blessing of pets, live Christian music with the Lone Star Glory Band, free pony rides, bounce house, face painting, free hot dogs and lemonade, and other concessions. Bring your lawn chair and stay to enjoy the music. All animals must be on a leash, or in a cage, tank or other secure container.
Unity Baptist Church, 406 S. 34th St., where Chad Owens is pastor, invites you to services: Sunday — Sunday school at 9:45 a.m., worship and children’s church at 11 a.m., Bible study classes at 5 p.m., and worship at 6 p.m.; and Wednesday — prayer meeting at 7 p.m. King’s Kids Class meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. There will be dinner on the grounds, a wagon pulled by donkeys, and Brother Marvin Weido from Waxahachie will preach.
