Derrick Days 2009 is “good to go.”
That was the proclamation Tuesday by Brad Haynie, Derrick Days chairman, as the celebration’s committee held its final meeting before the start of festivities today.
Lunch in Pocket Park at 11 a.m. today on Beaton Street in downtown Corsicana kicks off the annual celebration of Corsicana’s rich oil heritage, a celebration that saw its beginnings in 1976. Today’s event features free hot dogs and soft drinks, plus musical entertainment by local musician Bobby Fluker. Fluker will be honored Saturday at Pioneer Village when he is inducted into the Hall of Fame during an 11:30 a.m. ceremony.
Thursday’s VOICE, INC. Spring Lunch-ON at the Cook Center features former Dallas mayor Laura Miller as guest speaker, along with the announcement of the Gioia Keeney Service to Children Award winner.
Downtown fun begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday night with a street dance at the corner of Commerce and Beaton Streets, along with a hot wing eating contest and “Cow Patty Bingo,” a fundraiser for Derrick Days that will also award a $500 cash prize to the holder of a “lucky” ticket — a ticket matching the number of a square that the cow chooses to “fertilize” first after being released. Fireworks are also on tap for downtown Corsicana beginning at dark, provided by the City of Corsicana’s Parks and Recreation Department.
Saturday’s events begin bright and early with the return of the Oil Town Mini-thon, a fundraiser for the Corsicana Education Foundation. A 5K run, and a one mile “run/walk” will take place, beginning in Community Park.
The Derrick Days Parade steps off at 9 a.m. Saturday downtown, featuring country musician Billy Joe Shaver as grand marshal. Shaver will also be at Caleb’s Diner downtown following the parade.
A new location for the Chili Cookoff is the old Stewart Motor Company parking lot at Second Avenue and Beaton Street, with 59 entries already set for the competition, which will include both chili and barbecue. Musical entertainment on two stages downtown, a classic car show, the 3 on 3 basketball tournament, arts and crafts and food booths and a variety of activities for young and old promise to fill the rest of Saturday’s downtown celebration, which is expected to take place under fair weather conditions.
