Rice classes to resume Monday

Rice — Rice students will be back in school Monday, and students in third through fifth graders will be in their same building, the Intermediate School which was damaged by a tornado Sunday.

That part of the school is intact and has been approved by the structural engineers as safe, according to Rice Superintendent Judith Pritchett.

Damaged beyond usability are portions of the junior high side of the building, along with portions of the cafeteria and gym. Barricades are being built to stop anyone from going into that portion of the school building. At least one pod of four classrooms will likely have to be demolished, Pritchett said.

Junior high students will return to classes at Rice High School, while special accommodations will be made at the Intermediate school for meals and physical education classes.

A new gravel drive is being built to allow for parents to drop-off and pick up children at the front of the Intermediate school.
