Life in prison for Daniels

Danyell D. Daniels was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for the 2005 shooting of DPS trooper Matt McGinnis.

The jury deliberated just under two hours before returning the life sentence in the punishment phase of Daniels’ trial that started Tuesday.

“We are very pleased with the verdict,” Navarro County District Attorney R. Lowell Thompson said after the sentence was handed down. “Justice was served.”

Jury foreman Rickey Newton said, “We were cognizant of the need to send the message that we are not going to tolerate attacks on police officers.”

McGinnis, who has since recovered from his injuries in the shooting and has returned to patrol, was in the courtroom as the sentence was read.

More coverage of the Daniels trial and verdicts will be available in the Friday print and on-line editions of the Corsicana Daily Sun.
