Letters to the Editor 5/3/09

Derrick Days kudos

To the Editor: I want to send out a special thank you to all who participated on the 2009 Derrick Days Committee. It was a great joy working with each and every one of them this year and I look forward to doing it again next year. Also, I want to thank the Stewart family for the use of the old location of Stewart Motors on Beaton and Second Avenue. Also to Spark Marketing who helped out a great deal in mapping out the location and for the Derrick Days Web site. Another big thank you to all of those who participated in the judging for the cook-off. We had several city and county officials out as well as local business owners to do the judging this year and this seemed to please all the cooks. This was a great help and allowed the judging/awards to run smoothly. Hope everyone had a good time this year and can’t wait until 2010.

All my thanks,

Dan Owen

To the Editor: A big thank you goes out to all of the volunteers who made Derrick Days 2009 a huge success. The event was larger than ever. Downtown Corsicana welcomed a crowd of around 8,000, and there were over 200 cars in the car show, in which the Shakers & Scrapers Car Club raised over $9,600 for VOICE Inc. We had around 40 teams in the basketball tournament, 17 teams in the washer pitch and 36 teams in the horseshoe tournament.

A special thank you goes to the Stewart family for letting us use the Stewart Motor Company property for our chili and barbecue cook-off. This year’s cook-off almost tripled in size, with 70 teams participating.

The event welcomed more arts/crafts and food vendors than ever before, and we would like to thank those vendors for their willingness to be a part of Derrick Days 2009.

Sincerely,

Brad Haynie

Derrick Days chairman

Trinity doctors future

To the Editor: When Trinity Mother Frances announced the clinic in Corsicana was closing, the news, via your article, spread like wildfire throughout the county. What you failed to mention is the fact that most, if not all, the doctors and staff will remain at the same location, just not working for Mother Frances anymore. Our patients are scared to death that all the doctors are going away and what are they going to do. Maybe an announcement is forthcoming about all this, and I hope the Daily Sun will let folks know we’ll still be here to take care of them. Thank you.

Thanks for the prom

To the Editor: We would like to thank Rhonda Dulworth for a job well done. Mrs. Dulworth is the new junior class sponsor at Corsicana High School which entitles her to the task of prom. What a wonderful job thanks to her, the junior students and their parents. Over 350 students attended a fun event with many not wanting it to end at midnight. It was a great place for the students of this community to be, keeping them safe and off of the streets for the evening. It could not have been possible without the support of this community.

Thanks to you the contributors that so generously donated: Wal-Mart, Family Dentist, Watkins Construction, Gilfillan Hardware, Brinson Ford, City National Bank, Community National Bank, Haynie Drilling Company, McKee Lumber Company, S&S Design, Subway, Cason’s Flowers, Sears, Canterbury Court, Corsicana Super Bowl, Corsicana Welding, Gibson Home Center, John Smith D.D.S., Trucks Unlimited Ward’s Sprinkler, Watkins Development, Winters Oil Partners, Corsicana Cleaners, The Home Depot, Express Care, Express Lube, Life ... Family expresses gratitude

To the Editor: The recent death of my husband, Major Charles “Chuck” Anderson, was a tremendous loss to our family as well as to the community. During our bereavement, the outpouring of support and encouragement was — and remains — of a magnitude to defy description. Friendly visitors seeking to do something to lighten our burden and calls of sympathy offering to pray for us in our hours of need, all made sure we never felt alone during that terrible time between his death and the time of the funeral; and even beyond to the present.

Then there is the endless supply of food and other supplies arriving at the door almost hourly! We were blessed to never have to prepare even one meal during the whole time.

This, of course, is what we have come to expect of our friends and neighbors here in Corsicana. This amazing display of compassion is a large part of what makes this such a great place to live.

Since it is quite impossible to say an individual “thank you” to so many wonderful friends, we — the Anderson family — express our heartfelt gratitude to so many concerned citizens who helped us so much during a very difficult time.

Affectionately,

Major Beth Anderson, Caleb, Aaron and Rebekah

Trash contract concerns

To the Editor: I am writing in response to the letter to the editor “Trash in the Can” on April 26, 2009. I live in Corsicana and I work for Allied Waste. I have been present at all of the council work sessions related to the trash contract. Allied Waste has been in Corsicana since 1995. Our office is on South 15th Street. We have 49 employees, most of which live in or around the city of Corsicana. As an employee for Allied Waste I can attest that it is a fantastic company to work for and the pay and benefits are probably some of the best provided in the city. Should the city award the contract to another company the city would gain a small company, lose a larger employer and have a net job loss. The bids presented to the city by both companies were almost exactly the same. The cost to the resident was exactly the same for basic service. There was a difference in the commercial costs, but with either bid the cost will go down for the businesses with dumpsters. With the recent tornado my question to the city is this: What would happen if it had been worse? My company has helped cleanup after Hurricanes Rita, Katrina and Ike. We have the resources to handle a catastrophe. Is it worth the chance to go with the unknown, small company that has been in business since 2005 ... or do you stay with the known? Please help me and my coworkers keep our jobs in OUR city. Please contact your city council person and voice your opinion.

Laura Capehart

To the Editor: In regards to the letter on the trash service. Do you even understand the impact it will have on the city if Allied pulls out? Also are you aware that the company seeking to take over the service is an extremely small — less then 10 truck operation (according to their Web site).

The city will lose out on jobs if Allied leaves as the new company is based in Ellis County, so guess where they will hire from? They will lose out on trash that is dumped in the landfill from Allied that is not picked up here in this city. And is the new company going to work with the city on events such as Derrick Days? This new company is wanting the commercial business as well but yet they do not have the equipment to provide this service so where is all the dumpsters going to come from?

Sure if this new company gets the contract they say they will buy everything they need but that’s not money spent here in Navarro County or Corsicana. They will purchase fuel for their trucks in Ellis County, not Corsicana. Allied has been here a very long time and, yes, as the years have gone by the price has increased as per the contracts they hold with the city. Yes, they studied going to the larger cans and once-a-week service. I have heard a lot of good things from people concerning the cans. Less trash around the neighborhoods, etc. It will be sad to see all the jobs lost here in this county if Allied doesn’t continue the Corsicana contract. Not to mention the other revenue lost without them operating here.

Derrick Days question

To the Editor: It amazes me that a small friendly town, such as ours, would not be able to come together for one weekend in peace. Derrick Days is a prime example. What is it with the underage drinking, fights, foul language, at what is suppose to be a time for family and friends? Not some big get drunk let’s fight party. I just had to say it is a disappointment that people from out of town and our own have to be subject to such nonsense at a longtime event. So folks let’s grow up and let the kids under the age of 18 have a safe fun Derrick Days in 2010.
