Words of thanks

To the Editor: We would like to thank the people of Corsicana and Navarro County for making the car show during Derrick Days the biggest and best one so far. Without the support of local businesses and visitors to Derrick Days, we would not have been able to raise over $9,600 for VOICE this year. We had over 200 vehicles from all over the state as participants who came and contributed to our local economy. Our goal each year is to have more cars than the last show and had the rain not prevented some from the east and south from attending, we would most likely have approached 250 participants plus our own cars. Our car show has a reputation as being one of the best in the area, because Derrick Days provides so many things for the participants to do while they are here. Again, thanks to the Derrick Days committee and to the entire community for your support in our quest to help local charities.

To the Editor: Collins Middle School recently hosted “Tiger Night” for the upcoming seventh and eighth grade students. It gives the kids a chance to view classes available to them at Collins. Thanks to all the teachers and staff that volunteered their time to this event. There was a raffle held for all those in attendance. There were many wonderful donations made to help make this raffle a success. Collins would like to give a special thanks to: Steve Petty (Carl White Chevrolet), Lawson Dunn’s Landscaping, Screams Communication, Mrs. Wanda Neely-Ward, McKee Lumber, Little Caesar’s, S&S Designs, Custom T’s, Reflective Image, and Princess Bow-tique (Tracy Petty).

To the Editor: A couple of weeks ago my husband and I were at the Wal-Mart store in Corsicana. There was a very special lady (whom I will call an angel). She noticed my husband confused and lost in the parking lot. She went to him and was extremely nice and helpful to him. I first thought that she was someone he knew so I didn’t get to thank her in person. I pray that God will bless you and your family abundantly, and I thank God for having special angels around when we need them.

About the recycling ...

To the Editor: Do not forget to include a recycling drop point in Corsicana for those who recycle that live in the county with the new company. I recycle all recycle materials and drop it off at the local recycling drop on South 15th.

Dog owners alert

To the Editor: Dog owners beware! With the rain we have received recently has come a nuisance by-product, mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are responsible for infecting dogs with heartworms and if left untreated can be fatal. Heartworm treatment is a very painful process for a dog to undergo and it is very expensive. Please be responsible, have your pet checked for heartworms and get them on heartworm preventative such as Heartguard. With the climate we Texans enjoy it is really important to keep your dogs on preventative all year round. Keep water from standing near your home and becoming stagnant to prevent breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Birdbaths, buckets and anything else that can collect water should be emptied frequently. If your dog stays outside during the day, keep fresh water in his bowl. Empty and refill with fresh water daily. Fresh water is not nearly as attractive to a mosquito as is stagnant water.

If you have questions or concerns about your dog’s health, please see your local veterinarian as soon as possible. Heartworms don’t get better without human intervention so keep your pet protected.

Video fairness?

To the Editor: Glad to see the Daily Sun update the Web site with streaming video. I have noticed the past few weeks that President Obama’s weekly address has been published and available. I don’t remember any coverage of the past administration weekly address by the Daily Sun, and I would hope in the future that this feature will continue no matter who the president is. Whether or not you voted for this president, he/she does deserve the respect of the office, something that was not extended much to the last administration.

Bryan golf comparison

To the Editor: Shawn Edwards wrote a comparison somewhat of the Bryan Municipal Golf Course as compared to Oak Trail Golf Course. I appreciate Shawn’s article as it does bring attention to a cause local golfers are supporting.

An interesting point that Bryan Parks and Recreation director Darrell Lovelette makes is that Bryan has a population of 65,660. This more than doubles the population of Corsicana. Some will say this statement hurts the cause for asking our city to take on a public golf course — this can be misleading.

Information found by the computer tells us that Bryan has four golf courses that are open to the public within its city, including College Station. There are also three private golf courses within the city of Bryan. The city of Hearne has a public golf course and is only 13 miles from Bryan. Navasota has two public golf courses within just a short distance from Bryan.

It seems that there must be a lot of competition just within Bryan among the seven golf courses. (This could be one golf course per 9,380 people.) Corsicana has only the County Club golf course per 26,463 people.

Lovelette admits that last year the municipal “course operated at $90,000 deficit and this year we are running in the black.”

“Hello!” What does this tell you? It is the first of May and Bryan Municipal has made up the $90,000. Seems to me that the course is doing more than just “breaking even.”
