Grateful for firefighters
To the Editor: All too often we take for granted our 911 dispatchers, volunteer fire departments, and the Corsicana Fire Department, because we have never run into a situation which has threatened our lives or our homes.
On Wednesday night, June 10, we had a lightning strike followed by a fire in the eaves of our roof. My wife called 9-1-1 as I did the best I could to fight the fire with a garden hose in the attic.
I don’t have the exact times, but we called at approximately 10 p.m., and 10 minutes later, the Richland/Chambers 287 Volunteer Fire Department, the Eureka Volunteer Fire Department, and the Corsicana Fire Department arrived. These men had one mission, and it was to make sure that we were safe and do the best they could to save our home. And that they did. Without the Corsicana Fire Department and the Volunteer Fire Departments we would have lost our home to a lightning strike. All our possessions would have gone up in flames.
That is why my wife and I would like to sincerely thank the 9-1-1 dispatcher and especially the firefighters, who saved our home. God bless each and every one of you.
With our sincerest gratitude,
Steve and Chris Richmond
Kudos to Ludwig, CISD
To the Editor: As this school year ended our family received a letter from the Corsicana school district. The letter informed us that our son, who is going into the fifth grade, had been selected to attend a leadership camp during the summer and participate in activities throughout the upcoming year. We were very excited about our son being selected for such a big honor. And as part of the summer camp there is a dinner where the parents come and learn about the program.
It was at this dinner that we meet the man behind the program, Rob Ludwig, and the magnitude of our son’s selection and the depth of the program really hit home. Up to this point we had assumed that our son’s selection and participation was limited just to the upcoming school year. After talking with Mr. Ludwig we discovered that this is a more permanent selection that allows our son an opportunity to participate in this program through his high school graduation. That is an absolutely huge deal that can help our son find more opportunities when the time comes for him to start thinking about college, and for that we are very grateful.
And after attending this year’s dinner, meeting Mr. Ludwig, seeing all of the young students who were very excited to be there, and hearing of past successes of students who participated previously, I feel compelled to spread the word about the great things that they are doing for students in our community and the potential this program has to help mold the leaders of tomorrow that we so desperately need.
I want to express my gratitude to Mr. Ludwig and all those who supported his program and hope that they continue to provide this opportunity to the children of Corsicana. I genuinely think that if those businesses who supported this program know of the positive impact Mr. Ludwig is having on these children and their families that they will continue to provide their support. And I would hope that as others hear about this program and the good things that it is doing that they too will want to be involved in supporting this program and/or starting others like it in our surrounding communities and schools.

Letter of thanks
To the Editor: The American Legion members would like to thank the community for their support at our annual brisket cook-off fund-raiser. Randy Richards and Shane Richards took first place and Jean O’Conner took second place. It was a great success. Thanks to everyone who made this successful.

Who is in charge?
To the Editor: I have a question. What are the laws regarding young male kids walking around with their pants bellow their bottoms, showing their dirty underwear, also loud music (2 and 3 a.m.) at the red bricks on North 13th Street? Who can I talk to who cares? Police and sheriff, seems like they don’t want to be bothered, other issues also.
Thank you,
Weldon Dennis
The boys of summer
To the Editor: I am writing this letter to let the residents of Corsicana know that they are fortunate to have a wonderful summer league baseball program. This year was the first year that I have been involved in the summer league program in a while. I was a little bit hesitant because I knew the history of the summer program. Boy, was I was surprised.
First of all this was the first year for my oldest grandson to participate in baseball. He was blessed by being chosen to be on the Pinto League Braves. Coach Johnson, Coach Vadasy, Coach Smith, and Coach Farmer were the hardest-working coaches that I have seen in a long time. They gave of their time and heart to make sure each player learned the game and gave their best. The team ended up winning it all. Thank you coaches for a great year.
My younger grandson was chosen to be on the Shetland League (T-Ball) Cardinals. Coach Olsen, Coach Johnson, and Coach Merideth were outstanding coaches. They also worked very hard and gave of their time and heart to make sure each player learned the game and gave their best. The team ended up in second place. Thank you coaches for a wonderful year. This little team had a tradition after each game. They prayed. It was priceless to see and hear these little guys pray.
Thank you so much coaches from the Braves and Cardinals in making my sons and my return to the summer league programs so sweet. See you all next year.
Sincerely yours,
Sharon Brown (grandmother to Chad Timothy Brown Jr. and Peyton Garrett Brown)

Some editorial feedback
To the Editor: The Thursday, June 11, edition, page 4, had an article about the Obama administration rejecting direct intervention in corporate pay decisions even though some believe excessive compensation in the private sector contributed to the nation’s financial crisis. It further stated they want to “tame compensation through shareholder pressure and less management influence on pay decisions.”
I have owned rental property in the past and found I could write-off from my taxes all the expenses of travel to the properties, phone calls, etc., in the management of the properties.
I also have investments in stocks and mutual funds. Upon checking about traveling to annual stockholder meetings to be involved in the management of these investments, I found that I could not write-off those expenses from my taxes. Upon further investigation I learned that the Republicans in conjunction with financial brokers and corporate interests passed legislation to deny individual shareholders these tax write-offs. Brokers and fund managers can write-off these expenses, but not me. It shows that they don’t want individual share owners to attend the meetings where these immoral, barely ethical activities can be challenged. I hope new legislation is passed to allow me the right to better manage my portfolio and help stop excess corporate compensation.

Thanks for support
To the Editor: Navarro County Branch NAACP education committee and Lifeline Church and Family Services sponsored “Getting Serious with Education” (GSWE) tutorial program.
The tutoring program was designed to assist students in sixth through 12th grades retain the knowledge and skills needed to graduate from high school and become competitive in our society. The tutoring program was held at Lifeline Church and Family Services.
Parents transported students to and from the facility each Wednesday. Upon arriving at 4:30 p.m., students were given nutritious snacks before tutoring. We had a total of 38 students enrolled in our program with an average of 25 to 30 students present each Wednesday. The students were focused and quite engaged in the information presented to them. It was quite amazing to watch them as they listened and asked questions concerning the skills being taught to them.
We were fortunate to have math teachers Rosie Kelley and George Burrell working very hard with students needing assistance in math, and teachers Sam Humphries and Abigail Thomas working with students who needed assistance with science. Many of the students and parents have called to say “thank you” and to inform us that the tutorial program was very helpful in assisting the students with passing the TAKS.
Many, many thanks to Pastor Ricky Walter and staff for assisting in co-sponsoring the program, for the use of their facility, offering transportation for the students, purchasing materials and preparing snacks for the students. Thanks to Lifeline, each teacher was compensated for services rendered to the students. We were also very appreciative of a donation given to the program by an anonymous donor.
Mr. Berringer, vice principal, CHS; Mrs. Kelly, instructor, CMS; and CISD, thank you for supporting us with your suggestions as well as the materials you provided for the students.
God bless you,
Elmeree Burrell
