Letters to the Editor 7/13/08

Power plant position

To the Editor: My husband B.J. and I are lifelong residents of Navarro County and live on Pisgah Ridge one mile from one of the proposed power plants. We were residents of Corsicana from 1940 until 1969 when we moved to our current home on Pisgah Ridge. It sets on 149 acres of land that has been in my family since the 1800s. We have a spectacular view and believe it to be one of the most scenic places in the county. Land owners and residents of Pisgah Ridge have spent millions of dollars in the last 20 years to enhance and maintain the beauty of the area.

My husband and I attended Corsicana schools and Navarro College, as did our daughters. I retired after 30 years with CISD and my husband managed our land and cattle operation since 1963. I mention this only to emphasize the importance of Corsicana and Navarro County in our lives.

Both of us want economic development and growth for our county, but not at the risk of compromising the health of its residents. Naturally, we are concerned about pollution from the plant and the effect it will have on our land, our livestock, and us...

We are also concerned about providing the power plants with the necessary water to operate. We are just not convinced we will always have enough water for our county to keep up with increased population and future droughts.

Our hope is that Navarro County officials will decide power plants are not the best thing for Navarro County and that the proposed 30 jobs one will offer once it is in operation are not as important as our health. Another concern is if the construction jobs while the plant is being built will be filled with local residents needing work or people moved in temporarily.

We have been to so many meetings and been given so many facts and figures, but the unknown is what I fear most.

Rotary Club appreciates support

To the Editor: As chairperson for the 26th annual Corsicana Rotary Club Freedom Festival, I would like to thank our community for your support of this event. It was a pleasure to join with the Child Advocacy Center’s Duck Dash fund-raiser. This, too, was a success and very well supported.

Thank you so much to Sharla Allen and her great crew with the city for our beautiful and clean I.O.O.F. Park. Thank you to one of our community heroes, James Sikes, and the Corsicana Emergency Corps, and to Donald McMullan and the Corsicana Fire Department for filling our dunking booth and for being on hand in case they were needed, and to James Palos for his willingness to help in any way that he could. Thank you to the Corsicana Police Department for being on hand and keeping the park safe. Thank you to the Corsicana Swing Orchestra for filling the park with their beautiful music, and the Rev. Billy Elias, for sharing his God-given talent.

Thank you to Chris Persilver, our military hero, for serving our country in Iraq and speaking to us about his time there. Thank you to our good-natured friends, Mike Kastor, James Lagomarsino, Lowell Thompson, Randy Dill, and Faith Holt for participating in our dunking booth.

Thank you to Kim Martinez and the Child Advocacy Center for all their work and cooperation.

The Rotary Club is so proud to provide this event every year. This would not be possible without the continued support of our donors: Community National Bank Eady Trust, Navarro Community Foundation, and the Bank of America Katherine C. Carmody Trust.

I thank all the Wednesday Corsicana Rotary Club for all their help and support to keep this Rotary Club tradition going.

The Corsicana Rotary Club meets each Wednesday at noon in the Optimist Room at the YMCA. If you would like more information concerning joining the Rotary Club, please contact me at (903) 875-7340.
