Corsicana Daily Sun

— Protecting the children

To the Editor: Nearly 200,000 Texas children are reported as abused or neglected every year, according to Child Protective Services, a division of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. April is child abuse prevention month in Texas and in the nation.

"It's a time to focus on ways not only to protect children but also to prevent abuse from ever occurring," said Debbie Hawk, Director of the Early Childhood Academy. "This is our opportunity to make a difference in young lives."

Neglect is the most frequent form of child abuse, according to the state agency charged with protecting children.

"Yes, children die simply because they're put in situations where they are not supervised," said Debbie Hawk, Director of the Early Childhood Academy. "But parents are not alone."

The Web site contains a wealth of information on how to prevent child abuse, where to go to get help with parenting skills, and what to do if you suspect a child is in danger. Additionally, volunteers from Corsicana Coalition of Child Care Directors are in the community sharing information from Child Abuse Prevention Kits.

Contact your local Child Protective Services office for more information.

Appreciates support

To the Editor: The Mildred Elementary “Relay for Life” team and students would like to give a big thank you to CVS and OLE pharmacies.

With the help of Pharmacy Tech., Barbie Middleton, CVS was gracious enough to give us 200 prescription bottles. Former Mildred ISD graduate and board member, John Collier with OLE pharmacy, was also gracious enough to donate 200 bottles, as well. These bottles will be used for our students to collect quarters in another fundraising effort for the team.

We really appreciate both pharmacies for helping to make this fund raiser a huge success.

To the editor: Thank you to Mr. Smith of M.R. Smith Parlor for Funerals for being so kind as to build a form and install a monument of names of the First Founders of Cedar Grove Cemetery Association in Streetman. Your kindness meant so much to all of the members.

Thanks a million,

President Rachel Dancer Harris and all the members
