Letters to the Editor 2/22/14

To the Editor: According to a Gallup poll, 73 percent of the American people are in favor of term limits.

If you are one of those Americans favoring term limits there is good news. Term limits exist — they are called ELECTIONS.

Every two years the State of Texas holds primary and general elections.

If you think that an elected official is performing his responsibilities in an exceptional and capable manner, vote for the incumbent.

Vote for the challenger if you believe a change is required.

The choice is yours.

Election thoughts

To the Editor: I would like to ask the voters of Navarro County Pct. 2 to cast their votes for Dick Martin in his reelection bid for commissioner.

Our county commissioners are elected on an individual precinct basis by the voters residing in that specific precinct. It is equally important to realize that the commissioners court also has a responsibility to all the people in Navarro County.

That responsibility is huge and requires stable, intelligent, thought-provoking, knowledgeable, problem solving conversations and intestinal fortitude to actually cast a vote based on the underlying facts — the real facts as supported by real evidence or research.

This process is not achieved easily. Dick Martin does his homework, is open to new directions, well prepared and knowledgeable when an issue comes to a vote. Dick spent several years attending commissioners court meetings in order to be familiar with the procedures of the court. This attention to detail is, by itself, reason to return him for a second term.

A preacher friend of mine once told me that “everyone wants to go to heaven... but nobody wants to die.” The commissioners court has to figure out how to pay for all the services that we constituents expect and demand. They must balance this expenditure of funds against the ‘income’ of the county. This decision making process is not designed to win them friends, but to come to decisions that are the best options at that time for Navarro County and its citizens.

I do respect those that spend the time and effort it requires to make thoughtful, rational and intelligent decisions. The more people that we elect of Dick Martin’s caliber will only enhance our county.

Respectfully submitted,

Ralph E. Townes Jr.
