Corsicana — Disputes report

To the Editor: I have waited several days since this article was printed trying to buffer my comments. ...

Ammonium nitrate is a stable compound, unlike the Chemical Safety Board reports. It is not flammable, combustible or explosive it its granular form. Yes, it did explode, but not until it reached temperatures that caused it to melt. ... There was a series of events that had to occur for this to happen ...

When the Chemical Safety Board said his could have been prevented, they are right — the way car accidents can be prevented. Don’t drive, and you’ll never have an accident. This fertilizer has to change forms to be dangerous. It did in West on April 17, 2013, as we all know, and I can assure you that I know this all too well. ...

The Chemical Safety Board says volunteer firemen should have known what could happen and should train for this. They need to become a volunteer and see if any training would prepare anyone for an event this catastrophic. The board came out with this report before the State Fire Marshal or the ATF have reached any conclusions, in my opinion, just to say they reached their conclusion first. They want to say “we told you so” because they are wanting more government oversight and rules. ...

I would be the first to want to find someone or something to blame this on, but there is nothing, or no one at fault. This was a terrible accident that no one wanted, but also once these series of events lined up and took place, no one could have prevented it. The Chemical Safety Board said “make the fertilizer safer.” Then you no longer have ammonium nitrate — it would be something else ...

My son was around ammonium nitrate and other fertilizer and chemicals all his life. He respected how to use them but was not fearful of them. If someone had been at fault in West, I would want that person to pay for what happened. There is no one. It was a terrible accident that, in my opinion, could not have been prevented once the events lined up, no matter what the Chemical Safety Board says. ...
