Letters to the Editor 7/1/12

Corsicana — To the Editor: The Humane Society of Navarro County currently has 282 dogs and cats on its waiting list for assistance with the spay and neuter of family pets. Thanks to the generosity of the citizens of Navarro County, the HSNC has recently raised $25,000 through its membership drive and its annual fundraiser, the Dawg Daze of Summer Sooner Raffle and Chili Cookoff. The Humane Society can once again begin to honor requests for financial assistance with spaying and neutering of pets. As always, a system of first come, first served assures that pets that have been on the waiting list the longest have the first opportunity for surgery. When additional funds and a new dog grant become available, the Humane Society will honor more recent requests for assistance.

The Humane Society's primary mission is to promote the spay and neuter of pets and prevent pet overpopulation and the senseless killing of animals housed in shelters. While most modern shelters offer only spayed and neutered pets for adoption, Corsicana's impound facility, the City of Corsicana Animal Shelter, does not. By assisting pet owners who wish to do the right thing and prevent unwanted litters of  both dogs and cats, many lives are ultimately saved. Healthy spayed and neutered animals make better pets. A community in tune with spay and neuter has fewer dumped animals and fewer pets running at large to breed over and over again.

For information on the HSNC spay/neuter program, please visit, find the Humane Society on Facebook, or call the HSNC office at 903-875-1060. The HSNC has no grant for spaying and neutering cats and relies totally on donations for its cat program. Grant money and donations are used to support the dog program. The HSNC welcomes donations in the form of memberships, memorials and honorariums at P.O. Box 1734, Corsicana, TX 75151.
