Students receive scholarships
Navarro Pecan Company of Corsicana once again has provided scholarship funds for deserving chemistry students on the Navarro College Corsicana campus. These funds are available because of the chemical testing of pecans performed for that company by the chemistry department under the supervision of Tom Hammargren, chemistry program coordinator and instructor. Joe Guerra, assistant dean of arts and sciences, and Hammargren evaluated the scholarship applications and decided how the monies would be divided among this year’s recipients. Awards ranged from $200 to $400. Chemistry students who received a scholarship are Christina Cutting, Amir Karimloo, Justin Redford and Shea Tyner.
“Mr. Austin E. Nixon, general manager of the Navarro Pecan Company, is the individual who helped us begin this scholarship program, and who continues to support it. We, at Navarro College, are very grateful to him,” Hammargren said.
Frazier scores highest on GED in Texas
The Adult Education program at Navarro College has announced that Rebecca Frazier from Frost has obtained the highest test average in Texas on the General Educational Development (GED) test. Because of this accomplishment, Frazier has been awarded the Texas Associate for Literacy and Adult Education (TALAE) scholarship of $1,000 in higher education. The purpose of TALAE is to promote leadership, professional growth, promotion of adult education and linkage to local, state, regional, and national organizations interested in literacy and adult education.
Navarro College offers free GED classes throughout Navarro, Ellis, Limestone and Freestone counties. Frazier attended GED classes in 2007. She participated in the Navarro College Adult Education GED graduation in June the same year. “I gained a lot of useful information on how to become a productive citizen,” Frazier said. Her advice to future GED students: “Stick with it, and you will succeed. It gets easier, and there is help out there for you. Just push yourself. Don’t give up on your GED.”
Frazier is currently attending Navarro College and is majoring in business. She thanks the Adult Education Program for helping her achieve her goal of going to college. Any person involved or interested in any facet of adult education is invited to join and promote adult education in Texas.
