Big Apple Countdown — Week #1
By Chase Springer
Here it is folks, the end of the countdown, and I’m going to get straight to the point: the thing I will miss most about Corsicana is the fabulous, one of a kind Corsicana-only specialty called Two Doors Down.
Of all the places and people and memories I have had in my wonderful hometown, none can even compare to what Two Doors Down has meant to me over the past year and a half (I was there BEFORE it opened to the public) when it comes to the nature of this countdown.
Two Doors Down — mainly due to owner and close friend Todd Jones and other staff members/friends like Devin and Jessica — has been my go-to spot for almost everything. From sickness to anxiety to absolute bliss, Two Doors Down has been like a second home to me that shared in the good times and helped me through the bad.
Now, I only have one week left to enjoy this amazing patch of heaven on earth before I move off to the big city where there’s a coffee house on every other corner.
Yet somehow I know that none of them could ever hold a candle to our little coffee house on 6th Avenue. The reason: Todd Jones.
What can I say about the man who has been like a father to me for all these years — from the time I met him in 6th grade when I started going to Mildred Baptist Church with one of my best friends Erin Chu to when we worked together in various musicals and finally when he opened my favorite place in Corsicana?
First, I must say thank you — for the memories, for the guidance, for your unwavering faith in me and my dreams, and for your constant presence in my life. Todd, you have been an inspiration, a friend, a father, and just someone who will listen for such a very long time, and I cannot thank you enough for our friendship and all you’ve done for me as I grew these past few years.
Secondly — as if this was not apparent — I must say I will miss Todd and Two Doors Down. It’s going to be tough to not have that little go-to place for urban life in the middle of a town that really is not my city-type style. Sure, I’ll be living IN the city by the end of the week, but I think Two Doors Down is more of an urban paradise than anywhere I’ll ever stumble upon in New York City.
And finally, I must say a word in parting here: I will be back. Be it for a short winter break from school or another long summer back home, I will return and I will once again walk through the doors of my second home and smile at the man who has made such a difference in my life.
So, Todd and the rest of the workers at Two Doors Down who have been such a blessing in my life, I say good-bye now. But you will be in my mind and heart wherever life may lead, and I will stay in touch until I return again to enjoy another fabulous frappuccino or smoothie.
Corsicana has been a true blessing to have as a place to mature in, and I will never forget all the memories I’ve made here no matter how long I live. But now it is time to start a new chapter in my life that just happens to take place elsewhere.
I am off to the big city in less than a week now, but I know that Corsicana will always be my home and all these things I have missed on the countdown will be here when I return — waiting for my arrival and ready to welcome me back with open arms.
So, it’s off to pursue my dreams, everyone, and until next time we meet, take care and enjoy this town that has captured my heart. See “youse guys” soon!
