Danger, Will Robinson!

... and anyone else driving some of our streets

By Camille McClanahan

Information was brought to my attention this past week that the painted flowers at Community Park have changed. Obviously, I haven’t been walking at Community Park lately or I would have noticed! The yellow flowers — never was sure if it was sunflowers or Black-eyed Susans — which had been painted on the wood lining the creek at Community Park for years are no more. It’s just a reddish brick color now.

I know that some folks voted for certain issues on the City of Corsicana’s bond election in November 2007, while I voted against some of those proposed. Somehow the city has been able to find the money for paint (to cover the flowers) and, of course, the nearly half-million dollar Third Avenue street project between Beaton and Main streets (aka the golden street).

Why is it that the roadways which in many people’s estimation seems to be some of the worst ones are still in the same shape they were a year ago? Surely, you know the ones I’m referring to — Roane Road and 15th Street.

These two roads off Interstate 45 are in deplorable condition. If you haven’t traveled on either one lately, I’d suggest you do so and you’ll understand what I mean.

I have heard there’s been controversy for years about which entity was to fix the roads. State, county, city? Supposedly, none of the aforementioned wanted the responsibility.

Personally, I’m just waiting for the “right” person to go off the road such as a higher-up elected official and we’ll see how quickly the roads get repaired. All it takes is a little slip off the pavement and you could easily be a goner or at least face some major car repair bills.

Quite truthfully, I’ve been scared out of my wits when I’ve traveled on 15th Street and the oncoming traffic is composed of several duallies and it seems they want to shove me off the road. The same can be said of Roane Road. Didn’t the voters say “yes” to these roads being repaired or am I losing my mind? (Please no comments on that last one!)

My son and I took a little trip a couple of weekends ago to visit my sister and her family in Arkansas. Do you know that even the little towns we went through had smooth roads? Amazing! However, as we arrived back in Corsicana, there was no doubt we were back home. Yes, the dips and sways, bumps and lumps are prevalent in our town, and I’m ready for our streets to be fixed — especially the two which lead off the interstate into our town. As of now they are hazardous!

Something else comes to mind that is hazardous — dangerous, really — and it involves a recipe.

Last week, Toni Miles from Chatfield sent me a “dangerous” recipe. I couldn’t believe it would really work, but I tried it and it does. It was quite wonderful and easy (even though I had to cook my recipe longer since my microwave isn’t very high powered). I’m listing the recipe as Toni sent it to me, and as you read the recipe, you’ll see where the danger comes in to play. Enjoy this kind of “danger”; it’s much safer than traveling on some of our local roads.

Dangerous Chocolate Cake in a Mug

1 coffee mug

4 tablespoons flour

4 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons cocoa

1 egg

3 tablespoons milk

3 tablespoons oil

small splash of vanilla

3 tablespoons chocolate chips, optional

Add dry ingredients to mug, mix well with a fork. Add egg, mix thoroughly. Pour in milk and oil and vanilla, mix well. Add chips, if using. Put mug in microwave, and cook for three minutes on 1000 watts. Cake will rise over top of mug — do not be alarmed! Allow to cool a little; tip onto a plate if desired. Eat! (This can serve two if you want to feel slightly more virtuous.) And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world? Because now we are all only five minutes away from chocolate cake any time of the day or night!
