Lewis Mathison 80th Birthday

Lewis N. Mathison has seen many changes and events throughout his 80 years.  Born Feb. 20, 1934 to Lewis H. and Lura K. Mathison, Lewis has lived through World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Space Exploration and the Civil Rights Movement. He has experienced the joy of having four children, 13 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, along with the sorrow of losing many loved ones, the most grievous being the loss of his precious wife Bonnie, last April. They would have been married 55 years in September of last year.

Lewis was born in Exall Heights, a small community outside of Corsicana. He has also resided in Key West, Fla., and in Texas, the towns of Curry, Commerce, Chico, Blooming Grove, and Corsicana, where he currently resides. He attended Navarro College, and received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees from East Texas State University. Lewis spent 34 years of his life working as an Agricultural teacher, touching numerous young lives along the way. He was “Papa Lewis” to many young students.

Aside from his family, Lewis’ biggest achievements were serving in the United States Air Force, winning a state baseball championship while attending Navarro College, and receiving the Honorary Lone Star Farmer Award. Lewis has been a member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star for over 40 years.

Lewis’ children, Sharon and Gary Watkins, Nancy and Billy Sykes, Tim and Tiffany Mathison (Debra and Paul Goyne, who currently live in Germany, will be there in spirit) will be honoring him on Sunday, Feb. 23, 2014 with a reception at St. Lukes Methodist Church in Corsicana between 1 and 3 p.m. No gifts please, but your presence is requested if you have been touched by Lewis in any way.
