Local girl places in pageant

Za’Ryah L. Deckard, a first grader at James L. Collins Catholic School, was a contestant in the Henderson County Black History Committee Annual Spring Children’s Pageant held Saturday, March 30 at the Malakoff High School Auditorium. She participated in the “Miss Petite” category where Za’Ryah was second runner up out of seven other girls. Za’Ryah is the daughter of Jeremy and Brittney Deckard and the granddaughter of Penny Liggins. She and her family are members of Bethel AME Church.

Local Army private graduates from basic training

Army Pfc. Nasheili E. Martinez has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Martinez is the daughter of Leonor Martinez of Corsicana.

She is a 2012 graduate of Corsicana High School.
