Naomi Ray Johnston 80th Birthday

Join family and friends as they gather to celebrate 80 years of Naomi Ray Johnston’s life from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013 at Petty’s Chapel Baptist Church, 1300 FM 3041 (exit Roane Road off I-45). In lieu of gifts, the family asks you to bring an 8 1/2 by 8 1/2 inch quilt square designed your way and/or a scrapbook page of your memories.

Naomi was born in Powell, and graduated from Corsicana High School in 1950. She went to work for a legal firm in downtown Corsicana at age 16. In her life, she worked at Buckner’s Children’s Home for 10 years, at the Masonic Home for Children, and made blankets and caps for the babies at Parkland Hospital. She and her husband owned and operated Johnston’s Bait and Tackle, as well as Fisherman Acres in Cleburne until her husband, L.V. “Cotton” Johnston passed away. She married him in 1952, and he was in the United States Air Force, which allowed them to live in California for a time.

Naomi and Cotton had three children, a son, Gary Paul Johnston, and daughters Jill Delyte Hendley and Janita Ray Conger; 10 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

Her children have fond memories of her reading to them at nap times, teaching them to kill snakes in the country, catching tarantulas, and many other fond memories.

I am typically not an anxious person. Yes I like to get things done, rather than leave loose ends; that may make me a little anxious.

  • samantha stroube daviss.jpg Take time to breathe

We are all in such a rush these days that time is passing us by and I don’t even think we realize it. This year our family decided to stay home for Spring Break and have a “stay-cation.” I had such feelings of guilt not taking our kids somewhere, because we love to take every opportunity to expose them to the world, but it just wasn’t in the cards for us this year.
