Early filers in area school races

Thus far, there’s no competition for school board seats in the upcoming May 10 election.

Corsicana Independent School has two people filed for two places: Incumbent Kerri Anderson Donica has filed for Place 1, while Leah Dill Blackard has filed for Place 2. Donna Ralston is currently in Place 2, but she has not filed for reelection.

In Blooming Grove, both incumbents, Dan Patterson and Ricky McGraw, have filed for reelection.

In Dawson, no one has filed yet. The seats currently held by W.L. French and Kenneth Nesmith are open.

In Frost, incumbent Larry Kern has filed, as has Keith Speer. The open seats in Frost are currently held by Kern, Don Ballew and Van Perry.

In Kerens, incumbents Libby Layfield and Randy Bancroft have filed.

In Mildred, incumbents Bradley Boyte and Michael Cook have filed.

In Rice, the open positions are currently held by Nena Harwell, Kevin Thredford, and Lee Montgomery. It was unclear Monday who had filed thus far.

Filing to run for school boards and cities closes on March 10.

The last day for voters to register to vote in the school and city elections will be April 10, according to Danda Parker, elections administrator for Navarro County. Early voting will take place from April 28 to May 6, with regular voting on May 10.

If no challengers file for the various school board elections, then the schools have the right to cancel the election, and save the costs of holding the races.

In addition to the usual school board elections, Rice Independent School District has called for a bond election, not to exceed $10 million. The school board is interested in building an intermediate school to relieve overcrowding. The sale will be contingent upon receiving state assistance with the financing.
