Lending a helping hand

Last Saturday afternoon, as single mom Lupe Ramirez, her daughter Laura, a Navarro College student, and son Jonathan, a fifth grader at Blooming Grove Elementary, were away from home doing “Saturday things,” their home in Barry burned.
All they have left is what they were wearing, and their car.
As with most single mom households, finances are always tight, and unfortunately, corners were cut in the area of home insurance. The family has none.
Family members have come together to try and help the Ramirez family, and American Red Cross donated money, as well as arranging a place for them to stay temporarily. Niece Kristin Rash said her mother, Martha, has offered to let the family stay with her when they leave the motel today, until they can get back on their feet and find a place to live.
Lupe works for a local company, and Laura is studying criminal justice at Navarro, with plans to graduate in May. Jonathan’s “school family” at Blooming Grove Elementary helped with an event Friday.
“The fourth and fifth graders here (at the school) held a donation event where for any donation at all — one penny up to whatever — they could attend a movie and have all the popcorn they could eat,” said David Brewer, principal. “They raised over $600!”
If you would like to donate something to help the Ramirez family, contact Curtis Rash at (903) 354-6888 or Kristen Rash at (405) 795-8146.
