Kimbriel, Harbuck top Creative Arts division

— Grand champion in the senior division of the Creative Arts competition at Navarro County Youth Exposition went to Tyler Kimbriel of Dawson FFA for his large wooden table entry. Senior reserve champion was Alan Vitters of Corsicana FFA with his model cattle trailer.
Grand champion for junior division in Creative Arts was Alex Harbuck of Blooming Grove/Barry 4-H for her western wooden chest. Emily Stovall of Emhouse 4-H took junior reserve champion for her leather and denim fringed pillow.
Tyler Kimbriel’s project was a huge wooden table, with natural legs, and inlaid slate longhorn heads, barbwire trim, and a polyurethane covering.
“I entered a log bed last year and took second, so I decided I’d build a table, too,” Tyler said. “It took me a bunch of weekends between baseball practice. I used boards and slate that were left over from the building of our house, and one piece of wood I used had been sitting in my aunt’s yard for about five years.
“I also showed chickens, and will show a hog. The chickens didn’t do well, so this makes up for it!”
Alex Harbuck, age 9, said her dad only helped her with sawing for her wooden chest, which is decorated with western-themed iron pieces.
“I wanted something country, because we’re into that right now,” Alex said. “So we thought of a box, because it is useful, and you can put things in it. It made the sale!”
Alan Vitters, a sophomore at Corsicana High School, made a project which was a bit of a departure from his usual creative arts entries. In years past, he has created models of heavy equipment, with innovative uses of yellow paint and bicycle chain. This year, Alan opted instead to make a smaller scale cattle trailer, with very detailed authentic wood flooring, intricate welding, and gray paint.
“I spent about 100 hours on it, I guess,” Alan said.
“I love the creativity this year,” said Dana Collins, creative arts chairman. “We have a ton of different stuff. The projects are extremely varied this year, and we have more of the larger projects, which are now going to the sale.
“There is a free-standing game, very creative, called ‘Cowboy Golf,’ and a fountain, among other things. The students used a lot of natural things.”
