The final showdown of registered heifers was tense, but Slowpoke took it with the steady guidance of her owner, Garrett Leopard, who moved the blonde Charolais around like a pro Thursday night at the Navarro County Youth Expo.
Garrett said the new Grand Champion Slowpoke will return home to the farm for more work.
Winning Reserve Champion among registered heifers was Logan Peterson, with Blooming Grove/Barry FFA, who showed a big Brahman late junior yearling.
Zoette Ziegenhagen of Rice FFA won senior showmanship, with Dalton Leopard, Blooming Grove FFA, winning second, and Josh Hansen, Dawson FFA, winning third in that category. Logan Peterson won Junior Showmanship, with Garrett Leopard winning second, and Noah Grounds, Blooming Grove/Barry 4-H, winning third.
Heifers were shown in four overall categories: European, Brahman, British and American, and subcategories within those larger breed types. Winning the top two awards in each category were the following students: British, Cody Johnston, Emhouse 4-H; Zoette Ziegenhagen, Rice FFA. European, Garrett Leopard, Blooming Grove FFA, and Dalton Leopard, Blooming Grove FFA. Amongst Brahman heifers, Logan Peterson of Blooming Grove/Barry 4-H took first and second. American, Courtney Wilcox, Kerens FFA, and Natalie Jordan, Blooming Grove/Barry 4-H.
