Woman’s Club House Association

The title of the program scheduled at Kinsloe House for April 22 will be “Deeanne Gist, Derrick Days — Kinsloe House Style.” Best-selling author Deeanne Gist will return for Derrick Days. Joining in the celebrations for the second year, Gist, who was grand marshal in last year’s parade, will visit Corsicana as the guest speaker at the April 22 luncheon at Kinsloe House, 618 W. Third Ave. Her talk will be titled “Corsicana on the Bestseller list: How One Town’s Oil Boom History Shaped Two Bestselling Novels.” It is sure to be a hit with everyone.

Gist’s second novel set in Corsicana, “Deep in the Heart of Trouble,” was recently named a finalist in the 2009 Rita Awards for Best Inspirational Romance. Winners of the awards will be announced July 18.

Gist, the bestselling author of “A Bride Most Begrudging” and “The Measure of a Lady,” has a background in education and journalism. Her credits include People Magazine, Parents, and Parenting. With a line of parenting products called “I Did It! Productions” and a degree from Texas A&M, she continues her writing and speaking. She and her family live in Houston. Dawson Garden Club

On Feb. 3, Dawson Garden Club traveled to Sam’s Restaurant for lunch. This trip to Fairfield was the second excursion of the year, the January trip being to have lunch at The Farmhouse in Mexia. These field trips have given members opportunities to observe the flora and fauna of surrounding communities and have provided inspiration for developing the Dawson park area because special attention has been paid the furnishings of play equipment for children in these places.



José Antonio Navarro Chapter, DRT

José Antonio Navarro Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, met at noon April 1 to attend a luncheon at Kinsloe House presented by Beverly White, chairman of the flower committee. The guest speaker was Pamela Carroll, who did a very entertaining and informative program on “Landscaping in Texas with Shrubs and Flowers.” She was introduced by Betty Partain, policy chairman of Kinsloe House.

Geneva Davis, president of José Antonio Navarro Chapter, reported to the DRT members about the status of student essays entered in the DRT contest, the DRT convention coming up, and the activities of the Children of the Republic of Texas (CRT). José Antonio Navarro Chapter will be one of the hostess chapters at the state convention.

The chapter also attended a program at Kinsloe in January presented by Kinsloe House directors at large chaired by Eddie Pevehouse. The program featured Bobby Fluker, who told the story of music and musicians in Navarro County. Fluker, a vocalist, musician and local historian, played the guitar and sang songs by the musicians he described.



Thomas Meredith Chapter

Thomas Meredith Chapter, Colonial Dames XVII Century, attended a noon luncheon program at Kinsloe House April 1. The program was a guest speaker, Pamela Carroll, presented by Beverly White and the flower committee of Kinsloe House. A very entertaining and informative program on landscaping in Texas was enjoyed.

The program was introduced by Betty Partain, who was presented a pin from the Texas Society Colonial Dames of the XVII Century because of her civic activities in Kerens concerning the building of the new public library there and the Cotton Harvest Festival. The pin was presented by Gelene Simpson, president of Thomas Meredith Chapter, Colonial Dames XVII Century. Partain is a past president and longtime member of the chapter.

Corsicana Newcomers Club

Corsicana Newcomers Club will meet April 23 at Kinsloe House, 618 W. Third Ave. Social time will be at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be $12 and yearly dues are $20. You may park across the street at First United Methodist Church parking lot. The program will be by Dr. Tommy Stringer, Navarro College Foundation director. He will tell entertaining and historical facts about Corsicana. If you would like to attend the luncheon, you may make reservations by calling Chrystal Canty at (903) 396-2711.

The “Roadrunners” trip will be to Edom on April 16. Attendees will go to The Shed for lunch and to Blue Moon Nursery. Meet at First Baptist Church parking lot across from H-E-B at 10 a.m. to carpool. The Literary Club

The Literary Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. April 16 at Kinsloe House. The program will be “The Halbert Mansion,” given by Jimmy Hale. Joyce Parker is in charge of the program. Hostesses will be Gelene Simpson and Geneva Davis.
