BLACKARD: Shelton to perform for students

By Leah Dill Blackard, Navarro Council of the Arts

The Navarro Council of the Arts is proud to present percussionist Mark Shelton for the elementary students of Navarro County.

In his one-man show, Shelton draws upon a background that includes classical, folk, pop, jazz, gospel, ethnic, and new music to create an engaging collage with wide audience appeal. Shelton entertains and educates with a hip, fast-paced style, as he romps and stomps his way through an arsenal of percussion paraphernalia including marimba, doumbec, bones, bodhran, cajon, hammered dulcimer, Hang, and even some “body music.”

Shelton is a prizewinner in The National Association of Composers USA Young Performers Competition. He has appeared as percussion soloist on dozens of occasions. Having taught instrumental music in junior high, high school and college, Shelton uses his instructional skills in clinics and workshops on a variety of levels. He also produces a series of educational videos, musical recordings, and arts education components.

This fun percussion workshop will be performed for all pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students in Navarro County the week of May 4, making his rounds to each school in the county.

This will be the last arts in education program of the year for 2008-2009. The Navarro Council of the Arts is in it’s 30th year of presenting high quality performing and visual arts in our community.

This student enrichment program is sponsored by the Navarro Council of the Arts in cooperation with Corsicana and Navarro County schools and is made possible by grants from the Texas Commission on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and local contributors.
