Grand opening for Boys & Girls Clubs

From Staff Reports

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Navarro County will hold the grand opening of its new 10,000 sq. ft. building at 1000 East Fifth Avenue at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 17.

Featured speakers will be U.S. Congressman Joe Barton of Ennis and State Representative Byron Cook of Corsicana.

“We are looking forward to the grand opening of our new Boys & Girls Clubs building. We think it is an asset to the community,” said George Burrell, Boys & Girls Clubs Board president. “With the opening of the new building, the club will be able to serve more children in after-school programs. The Boys & Girls Clubs served more than 400 children in programs last year. The clubs are open to any child age 6-18 years old regardless of race, color, creed or socio-economic level.”

“As we serve children and families, the additional space offers new opportunities for our youth and families,” Eula Linicomn, executive director, said. “We are excited about the upcoming new and innovative projects offered at the Club.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs was organized six years ago. Ground breaking for the new facility was held in September 2006.

The Boys & Girls Clubs has two locations, the Corsicana Unit located at East 5th Avenue and Boys & Girls Clubs Salvation Army Extension at 212 East First Avenue. Sylvia A. Waters is program director and Patricia Webb is unit program assistant.

Programs offered at the club open from 3 p.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday include tutoring and mentoring, Power Hour (homework assistance), sports; computer technology, Boy Scouts, Keystone Club (leadership club for teens), Money Matters (money management program for youth), She’s A Lady (a summer seminar for girls covering leadership, nutrition and a healthy lifestyle), Boys & Girls Clubs Choir and The Bells Choir, art, 4-H Club, community service for youth and cultural and historical trips and tours.

The local B&GC is one of 4,500 clubs in the United States serving 4.8 million children.

The Boys & Girls Clubs is a leadership development organization. Its five core program areas are character and leadership; education and career development; health and life skills; the arts; sports, fitness and recreation.

The mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

The club strives to instill in each member a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and a sense of power or influence.
