Bright lights lit up

Students, teachers pay respects to each other

By Janet Jacobs

It was an evening of sentimental good-byes and good-natured ribbing at the fifth Bright Lights of Success banquet at the Cook Center, honoring the top 32 Corsicana High School students and their favorite teachers.

Each of the students were asked to choose a teacher to accompany them at the dinner, and the choices included teachers from elementary, middle school and high school, at least one counselor, an assistant principal, athletic sponsors and coaches.

“Coach Holcomb, you might be the goofiest, funniest, coolest coach I have ever met,” wrote Hill Crawford of Coach Shane Holcomb.

“I admire his good-heartedness, patience and the way he goes about his life,” wrote Hayden Grounds about Coach Billy Harlan.

“If you’re lucky, you’ll go to high school and have a teacher that will inspire you and change your life; Mrs. Muldner undoubtedly did that for me,” wrote Manasa Karmuri of Kimi Muldner.

In return, the teachers wrote about the students.

“Leaders are like eagles. They don’t flock, you find them one at a time. This is a clear example of Grant Magness,” wrote Shelby Curl of Grant Magness.

The Bright Lights banquet is named in honor of Gioia Keeney, who was a founding member of the Corsicana Education Foundation, which hosted the dinner.

The evening was sponsored by the Navarro Community Foundation.

Although the students, their parents and teachers ate well, and enjoyed the chance to share their success, the end of the evening brought about the best recognition of their accomplishments: Each student received a flat-screen television as a gift.

Dr. Keith Moore, principal at Corsicana High, was the master of ceremonies.

“I’m very proud of the students and the quality of young people you represent,” Moore said.
