Collins scholarship recipients named

From Staff Reports

Thirty-one Corsicana High School graduates are getting some extra help with college expenses courtesy of the James L. Collins Scholarship program.

The awards, made possible by a grant from the estate of the late Corsicana businessman, are awarded to select graduating seniors who are in the top 25 percent of their class.

Maintaining the scholarship requires students to maintain minimum grade point averages each semester while attending college. They are awarded by the Collins Scholarship board after applications and financial information from prospective recipients are reviewed.

Recipients of the Collins Scholarships from the Class of 2008 are: Alexis Aguirre, Javier Altamira, Leah Arnell, Drew Borellino, Lea Campbell, Cullen Carroll, Riley Chiles, Thomas Garay, Hayden Grounds, Shawn Hall, Kyle Hand, Heath Hayes, Lauren Haynie, Kendal Jessie, Colby Jock, Zachary Jones, Austin Jones, Manasa Karumuri, Brittnie Lawhon, Sarah Lyngaas, Grant Magness, Brison Manuere, Carolina Martinez, Patricia Martinez, Gabriella Palacios, Hannah Prim, Robert Restom, Brian Reyes, Russell Rodriguez, David Sandoval and Amber Wilkins.

Collins passed away in 1953, dividing his estate among four charities, including the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the scholarship program that bears his name. The money was used by the church to establish the James L. Collins Catholic School.

A Navarro County historical marker credits Collins with helping develop the oil industry in Corsicana and Navarro County.
