Grand Jury indicts armed robber

Total of 51 cases indicted in Thursday session

A Navarro County grand jury handed down an indictment against the suspect in the April 13 robbery of the 24th Street La Tiendita store.

Waymond L. Walker, 30, of Corsicana was arrested April 16 at a residence in the 1500 block of Maplewood.

Walker is accused of being the man of entering La Tiendita just after 9 p.m. on April 13, brandishing a silver handgun. The robber was wearing a bandana across his face with eye holes cut into it.

The robber was also wearing a cap and red shorts, according to a police spokesman interviewed the day after the robbery.

According to information from law enforcement, the man came around the counter at the store where three Hispanic females were working. He demanded money, which employees handed over in a green bank bag.

The grand jury also handed down an indictment against Jeremy Wade Martin, 26, of Navarro County for aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Martin was arrested after a high-speed chase through Corsicana on Seventh Avenue. During the chase, Martin is alleged to have swerved to miss a strip of spikes. Those spikes were placed in position by Corsicana Police Officer Chester Jones.

Police say that Martin headed toward Jones after he swerved, forcing Jones to dive out of the way in fear for his safety.

The suspect lost control of his car, running it off the road and into a field close to Resthaven Memorial Park on the western edge of Corsicana. Martin then fled on foot, but was found and arrested 45 minutes later.

District Attorney R. Lowell Thompson presented 57 cases to the grand jury Thursday. Fifty-one indictments were returned by the panel.
