Pearce Museum to have speakers program series

From Staff Reports

The Pearce Museum has announced the first of its speakers program series in conjunction with the “Celebrating Women” exhibitions. You are invited to hear Dr. Carole Lester speak June 4 at The Cook Center, located on the Navarro College campus. A reception in her honor will be held at 6:30 p.m. prior to the program at 7 p.m. Members can attend the program for only $2, and nonmembers for $5.

Lester’s presentation, “Like Dried Blossoms in the Wind: Images of 19th-Century Western Women,” will underscore the hardships endured by pioneers on the western plains, which have often been the subject matter for artistic representation. This presentation will look at how women pioneers have been depicted in historical accounts, literary works, and films.

Lester is the associate dean of academic enrichment at Richland College in Dallas. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree (magna cum laude) in American studies and a Master of Arts in Humanities degree from the University of Texas at Dallas, followed by a doctorate in history from the University of North Texas.

As part of the museum’s four “Celebrating Women” exhibitions, this program is funded by Humanities Texas and the Corsicana Development Commission.

The Pearce Museum at Navarro College is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays. For more information about this program and other activities at the Pearce Museum, call (903) 875-7642.
