Council approves on-line sales

By Janet Jacobs

Daily Sun

The Corsicana City Council voted Tuesday to use an on-line auction site to sell some surplus large equipment. The decision follows a similar move by Navarro County, which has been using the on-line site GovDeals.com to get rid of large earthmoving equipment that’s worn out or simply unreliable without having to ship it. On Govdeals, the buyers can be made responsible for shipping.

Among the items recommended for sale on-line are a 1974 bucket truck, several tractors, a 1960 fork lift, 1971 pick-up, a 1992 pickup and a 1979 dump truck, all from the public works department. The goal is to try to raise more money from an on-line auction as opposed to local or regional auctions, where there are fewer potential bidders.

“We don’t get much for this type of equipment from local auctions,” said Ron Lynch, public works director.

The council also took the following actions:

• Approved the proposed appraisal district budget, which is increasing 5 percent from last year. The number of employees will remain the same, at 12, but the company hired to do appraisals of minerals and industrial property has changed, which increased those fees, explained Chuck McClanahan, the city’s representative on the appraisal board.

• Two specific use permits were approved: One for a large storage and garage building at 2804 Winfield; and a second to allow the inside storage of recycling goods at 1632 Highway 75 South.

• Three residents spoke during the public forum part of the meeting about the sidewalk plans along 13th Avenue, saying that the current plans take up too much of the residents’ property.

• Ann Massey asked for a meeting of the council to discuss the uncollected ambulance fees of the city’s ambulance service. The city has a professional billing service.
